The UW Honors Program has an outstanding opportunity for a Counseling Services Coordinator to join our team.
The Counseling Services Coordinator represents the Honors Program in a variety of capacities to organizations and groups within and beyond the University community and serves as an adviser for prospective and current members of Honors. Primary responsibilities for this position include academic advising, providing administrative support for an introductory course for Honors students in their first quarter in the program, coordinating quarterly course scheduling, coordinating and providing support for student community groups and programs, and providing support for recruitment, admissions, data management and general academic services work.
Under the supervision of the Honors Program’s Director of Academic Services, this position will have the following responsibilities:
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Academic advising and student programming (65%) •Advise and counsel current and prospective students in planning academic goals, evaluating progress towards degree, problem-solving and developing post-graduate plans; hold regular drop in advising hours; regularly schedule student appointments; interpret departmental, college, and university requirements; discuss possible parallel academic plans; advise students about co-curricular opportunities; connect to resources for academic, personal health and well-being support. •Provide support to the instructor of HONORS 100, an introductory seminar for all first quarter Honors students, which may include coordinating class logistics and evaluation of student assignments. Support the accompanying Peer Educator program including assistance with recruitment and selection of peer educators, as well as class administrative logistics for HONORS 397, the Peer Educator prep course. •Collaborate with students to assess interest in student community building (groups, programs, etc.) and responsively facilitate and develop student community programming. •Coordinate and provide support and communication for existing student leader and community programs and RSOs, such as Honors Peer Mentors, and Honors resident advisers in the Honors Living Learning Community. Meet with student leaders regularly, provide communication to Honors staff about student community efforts, and provide support and necessary oversight for planned events.
Academic Services Operations and Administrative Responsibilities (35%) •Coordinate quarterly time schedule process including: coordinating with Honors Program’s directorship regarding course offerings and time schedule management; communicating with faculty about course information and time schedule listings; and assisting with registration. •Support Honors recruitment, including communications, scheduling appointments with potential students/families, and facilitation of information sessions. •Assist with general program inquiries and account(s), including assisting with triaging email, telephone, and walk-in inquiries. •Support implementation of Honors advising and orientation sessions during summer and assist in leading presentations and registration support to incoming students. •Assist with annual review of freshmen, second year, and scholarship applications. •Lead processing of graduation review, Honors credit-by-contract applications; and regular quarterly DARS exceptions. •Assist in documentation of associated Academic Services processes and policies. •Perform duties as assigned to support the broader goals of the Honors Program.
Competitive candidates will be detail-oriented and able to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals across campus and within the community. The position requires a resourceful individual who is proactive in seeking out and understanding the varying rules and regulations of a large research university and helping students interpret and understand those rules and regulations. Experience integrating diversity and equity as the foundation to mentoring, presenting, and/or teaching college students is desired.
This position provides opportunities to work with exceptional students who are recruited by top programs across the nation. The Counseling Services Coordinator is integral in representing the Honors Program and attracting engaged, interdisciplinary thinkers to the University of Washington.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
•Bachelor's Degree in any discipline; •2 years of experience with student advising, teaching, or similar experience
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
•Strong commitment to diversity and equity work as foundational to mentoring and advising experience and practice. •Demonstrated ability to take initiative, follow through on independent projects, and balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced student services setting; •Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation and public speaking experience; •Strong organizational and detail-oriented skills including management of sensitive information; •Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends; •Appreciation of the value of individual difference and the ability to provide an empathic and professional approach to working with students from diverse backgrounds and those with a spectrum of personal and academic challenges; •Strong work ethic and collaborative skills; and •Proficiency with Outlook, Google Apps, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe.
Desired qualifications: •Experience in academic advising and to work effectively with students as they develop decision-making skills; •Experience teaching, leading or mentoring college-age students; and •Knowledge of University of Washington academic procedures, policies and administrative systems (e.g., SDB, EARS, DARS, MyPlan, etc.).
