The Area Coordinator (AC) is responsible for the development and management of one or more Learning Communities in an area housing approximately 700-1400 students. Reporting to an Assistant Director for Residential Education, the AC’s role is to provide leadership and oversight for an area of campus that serves as a home for one or two Learning Communities. The Area Coordinator oversees the delivery of a meaningful residential experience by providing direct student support and intervention, building and maintaining a strong sense of community, and upholding a culture of student development embedded within our Learning Communities model. This is a required live-on position with a limited duration of a three (3) year term.

The AC’s goal is to instill respect and foster a sense of community that creates, promotes, and supports a socially just residential environment. Students, faculty, and staff are provided opportunities to understand, accept, and appreciate each other through various means including conversations, programming, advocacy, education, support, reflection, and relationship-building.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Supervision (20%) 

Serves as the day-to-day functional supervisor for one to three full-time professional Residence Directors (RDs) and one part-time graduate student (ARD) and shares administrative and functional supervision of Resident Advisors. The Area Coordinator is responsible for one-on-one meetings with RDs and ARDs which provide constructive feedback about job performance and offer ongoing transitional support for staff. 

Meets weekly with RDs and the ARD. The AC provides structure and support to the staff by role-modeling restorative practices, creating agendas, facilitating staff meetings, and providing information and guidance to all staff members. 

Provides developmental training and guidance for staff members and students to increase multicultural and intercultural competence. 

Provides functional supervision to the RAs primarily through monthly supervision meetings.  

Oversight of the implementation of the Community Learning Model within a Learning Community(ies).  

 

Policy Violation Adjudication (15%) 

Understands, interprets, communicates, and enforces University and Department policies.  

Monitors RD & ARD caseloads and ensures that they are adhering to processes and guidelines set forth by the Center for Student Conduct. 

Coordinates and implements monthly Health and Safety Inspections 

Oversee the Term & Conditions process which includes but is not limited to: Meeting with students, Administrative Documentation, and support processing charges. 

Actively confronts situations of intolerance and bias that result from a lack of knowledge and respect primarily through proactive and responsive community circles. 

 

Community Building & Response (15%) 

Respond to incidents of bias, discrimination, harassment, and other impactful situations primarily through restorative practices working collaboratively with the bias response team.  

Works collaboratively as a member of the Learning Community Leadership Team to develop and implement a co-curricular experience for students within their community. 

Builds community with staff members and residential students using the concepts of Restorative Practices and community standards, which create opportunities for student engagement in dialogue, interaction, and perspective-taking within their communities.  

 

Student Support and Crisis Intervention (25%) 

Provide primary proactive and responsive support for distressed or disruptive students and other students of concern identified by the University’s Behavioral Intervention Team who need in-person residential support within their area of 700-1200 students.  

Respond in person, and coordinates responses to issues related to students of concern (SOC) during and after regular business hours, which include but are not limited to: welfare checks for students of concern, SOC meetings, and follow-up communication. 

Communicate on a need-to-know basis with other Residential Life teams regarding students of concern and major crises within the community to facilitate collaborative support and response. 

Participates in the on-call rotating duty schedule for their respective area and responds to emergency calls on a 24-hour basis. 

 

Departmental Values & Initiatives (10%) 

Supports and participates in ongoing training, which includes but is not limited to professional staff training and Resident Advisor training. 

Required to serve on team and departmental committees.  

Creates and develops ongoing training throughout the year that complements the formal professional and RA training processes. 

Expected to attend all weekly Professional staff meetings for their respective area and unit. 

 

Administrative Responsibilities (10%) 

Oversight of Area budget including but not limited to establishing spending targets, reconciliation of individual purchasing card, and determining the use of staff developing dollars...etc. 

Where applicable, hires, trains, and supervises work-study students for their complex Fitness Center. Manages operations of the Fitness Center – including coordinating inspection and maintenance of equipment, membership rosters, approval of payroll, and fitness center policies and procedures.  

Carries out all processes and procedures involved in the opening and closing of the residential complex.  

Completes timely and accurate paperwork to ensure the accuracy of records and information systems regarding occupancy, billing, room changes, maintenance, and operations. 

 

Other Duties as Assigned (5%) 

 

A Master’s Degree is required in Higher Education and Student Affairs, Student Personnel, Counseling, Education, or a related field, and at least 1-year full-time experience is required.

Successful candidates will be subject to background checks due to the live-in nature of this position.
