Detailed Description:
In collaboration with the University Ministry Team, the Associate University Minister for Liturgy is responsible for the liturgical life of the university community. This position is grounded in the practice of pastoral care, faith formation, and community building that allows the liturgy to be the work of the people who seek to live the Gospel. The incumbent is responsible for organizing culturally contextualized Masses and, in collaboration with colleagues across campus, facilitating liturgies and other prayer spaces for significant university celebrations. The Associate Ministers for Liturgy must have passion to form young-adults to be leaders in the church with a keen attention to the pastoral needs of particular student cohorts, including Hispanic, Black, Indigenous, and other students of color and others with marginalized identities.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Oversee the liturgical life of the USD Community
  • Facilitate the Founder's Chapel Sunday worship community.
  • Supervise student sacristans who oversee the liturgical ministry and offer leadership formation.
  • Create a formation plan for Liturgical Ministry leadership that results in student sacristans who are empowered to be leaders amongst their peers who are reliable, competent, and capable of facilitating Mass independently
  • Recruit, form, and schedule liturgical ministers to serve as ushers, readers, and Eucharistic Ministers on rotation for all Sunday and university-wide liturgies.
  • Lead weekly liturgy meetings that incorporate student participation, presiders, and necessary partners for all university liturgies aimed at the planning and creation of spaces for intentional prayer for a diverse university community for all Sunday student-liturgies
  • Collaborate with members of the UM team to integrate ongoing ministries into our liturgical ministry.
  • Utilize social media and other emerging technologies to assist and support evangelization efforts and invite students to participate in University Ministry events.
  • Advise, counsel and mentor students; be available for pastoral care and spiritual companioning.

Oversee University-wide liturgies, including the planning, recruitment, and day-of execution
  • Facilitate liturgy meetings that incorporate student participation, presiders, the Director of University Ministry, and any necessary partners for all university-wide liturgies aimed at the creation of spaces for intentional prayer for the university community.
  • Organize detailing planning for and lead day-of oversight of large, university wide liturgies such as the Mass of Welcome, Mass of the Holy Spirit, the All Faith Service and the Baccalaureate Mass.
  • Work with community partners for special Masses that gather alumni, parents, and families for Masses in Founders Chapel
  • Serve on committees and planning groups for university wide liturgies.

Serve on University Ministry committees and task forces; collaborate with other UM staff on other programs; serve on university committees and execute duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Practicing Catholic with demonstrated familiarity with ministry in a university, ecumenical and interfaith context.
  • An MDiv, MTS, MA in Theology / Pastoral Care or related degree, or the equivalent experience.
  • Two (2) years of Campus Ministry experience - either as a participant, student leader, or in a professional role - at a Catholic college or university, Newman Center or related setting, or five (5) years of ministry experience in a high school, diocese, or other related areas.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least two (2) years of professional experience as a liturgist within a University or Parish setting.

Performance Expectations: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Rigorous theological education and ability to communicate theological, catechetical, and spiritual concepts to undergraduate and graduate students.
  • A robust understanding of the Catholic Liturgy and its implication in the spiritual and social lives of young adults.
  • Contributes creative and grounded approaches to liturgy and other forms of prayers.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and creatively as a member of a team
  • Sufficient initiative and confidence to work individually.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in facilitating group discussions, reflection, and faith-sharing group activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, coordinate, mentor, and support teams of student leaders.
  • Extensive knowledge of Catholic faith and practice.
  • Thorough knowledge of student development issues.
  • Ability to support and guide students in issues related to the integration of their faith.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish.
  • Valid drivers license and ability to drive University vehicles.
  • Proficiency in speaking Spanish.


Posting Salary:
$5,454 - $6,818 per month; Excellent Benefits

This is an 11 month position to be paid over the course of 12 months.

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
