DESCRIPTION

Under the general supervision of the ARC Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for a broad range of program support, program delivery, supervisory, and administrative functions related to skill development and academic support services of approximately 4000 students through MSTP annually, with a priority of serving underrepresented and underserved students.

The incumbent develops and presents workshops,and provides assistance to participants. Works directly with MSTP students, providing information and assistance relative to their academic and educational needs. Assists with the planning, implementation, and instruction of the OASIS First-Year Interest Groups Program (FIGs). Assists with the recruitment, training, and supervision of MSTP student staff, including workshop facilitators and tutors. Establishes and maintains liaisons with academic and campus departments vital to the implementation of program services, including and not limited to Teaching & Learning Commons and Academic Departments.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development. Graduation from college with major work in psychology, counseling, or related field, with experience in college-level student support service; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge in how to enhance students' intellectual and personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership. Ability to assess student needs and design academic support services accordingly.

  • Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as collaborative teaching / learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring, and advocacy. Knowledge of current pedagogy, technology, and trends, with demonstrated experience in developing instructional materials, curriculum design, development and implementation, and assessment of academic support programs, classes, and workshops geared to the specific needs of students within language arts and writing disciplines.

  • Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under prepared students in higher education.

  • Knowledge and experience in analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of students.

  • Knowledge and experience in researching, compiling and analyzing data, and generating reports. Demonstrated ability to compile and analyze data and prepare summary and or statistical reports and instructional materials with strong attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Knowledge of research methodologies and research designs. Skills in gathering, analyzing and synthesizing complex data for application in organizational strategic planning, and to determine program effectiveness.

  • Knowledge of and experience in conflict management and intervention strategies.

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.

  • Comprehension of theories and principles of higher education and student development, with ability to interpret and implement policies and procedures.

  • Multicultural competencies, knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations. ** Excellent oral and written communication skills including tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality, with ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor while interacting with a variety of individuals and groups at all levels of the university community from diverse socio-economic to cultural/ethnic backgrounds and to maintain confidentiality.
