Job Description

Staff Psychologist, Senior Staff Psychologist, or Social Worker

University Counseling Services of Boston College has an opening for a full time Staff or Senior Staff Psychologist or Social Worker. This is a full-time, 12-month position. Benefits are excellent and the salary range is competitive with peer institutions. We are seeking a clinician with demonstrated skills and investment in working with diverse student populations, and in providing effective time limited individual and group therapy. Staff psychologists would also have the opportunity to provide supervision within an established postdoctoral training program.

University Counseling Services (UCS) is a vibrant and well respected member of the university community. The mission of UCS is to address the mental health needs of the Boston College community, assisting students in the integration of the intellectual, emotional and spiritual dimensions of their lives. We seek to innovate and welcome opportunities for development of new ideas and approaches to the work, to which new staff may well contribute. The staff of UCS provides a wide range of direct clinical services to a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students. The UCS staff also works with faculty, staff, and administrators in consultation, outreach and numerous collaborative initiatives.

University Counseling Services is highly utilized with nearly 2,000 students receiving individual services each year. Counseling Services maintains close connections with the academic units of the university as well as with Student Affairs. The department enjoys strong working relationships with faculty, staff and administrators, as well as with various student groups. We work to be a welcoming and supportive resource to all students and the broader campus community.

UCS is highly invested in recognizing and honoring diversity among its staff and clients, evidenced by the guiding work of our Diversity Committee and ongoing attention to themes of culturally responsible clinical practice. UCS devotes both resources and attention to fostering an environment that values awareness and appreciation of all aspects of diversity. Our department's Diversity Committee works to support marginalized and disenfranchised student populations as well as facilitate training and discussion forums for UCS staff on issues of diversity. At the larger institutional level, BC recruits and supports a student body that is increasingly comprised of persons of color and persons who come from backgrounds of social and economic disenfranchisement. Presently, the proportion of students of color at BC is approximately 35%. Students with one or more marginalized identities are a large portion of clients served by UCS.

Responsibilities include:

  • Individual and group counseling and psychotherapy
  • Emergency coverage and crisis intervention
  • Solution focused time limited therapy
  • Clinical consultation to faculty, staff, students, and families
  • Outreach and training
  • Supervision of post-doctoral fellows
  • Collaboration with departmental psychiatrists

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in understanding unique mental health needs of
students of color, particularly Black/African American students, on a college campus
  • Previous experience working in a University Counseling Service

Typical hours are 8:45am - 5:00pm Monday - Friday. Some evening on-call is required as a back-up to external emergency coverage.

Each staff member is expected to contribute to the greater goals of the division and the university. These contributions (outside of your primary work area) may include supporting division and university-wide initiatives, staffing events, and serving on committees as needed. Some of this work may take place on weekends and outside of normal business hours.
