The Residence Life Coordinator for Outdoor Adventures is a 12-month live-in, professional staff member responsible for leading a vibrant and engaging outdoor recreation program.  The team member will lead a team of 8-10 paid student leaders to host 20-30 outdoor programs each year. Outdoor Adventures comprises 30-40% of job duties. 12% of Berea students participated in Outdoor Adventure programs in 2021-22!

Berea College owns over 9,000 acres of forest, with 3 multiple-use trail systems open to the public. The "Pinnacles" hike was named the #1 hike in Kentucky by Outdoor Magazine. Over 5 miles of trails can be accessed directly from campus, via the Brushy Fork Trails. Owsley Fork Reservoir, also owned by the College, is a popular spot for students to enjoy the water aboard college-owned canoes or kayaks. Berea College is located 40 minutes from the world-famous Red River Gorge climbing area.

Berea College is committed to sustainable living and the outdoors. Since 1875 The college has been canceling classes on Mountain Day to spend a fall day enjoying the outdoors. The RLC for Outdoor Adventures has the opportunity to collaborate with the vibrant Berea College Forestry Outreach Center and a popular Health & Human Performance Department with classes in outdoor recreation.

The RLC also serves as a member of the Residence Life Office, where the seek to provide welcoming residential environments that facilitate student engagement and involvement within the residence hall and greater campus community. The Residence Life Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the safety, security, and well-being of residential students living on campus. The Residence Life Coordinator will oversee core housing and residence life responsibilities while also maintaining Student Life goals, policies, and administrative processes. 

In support of Berea College’s eight Great Commitments, the Residence Life Coordinator will seek to foster diverse, equitable, and inclusive spaces that support educational opportunity and an understanding of the dignity of labor.  This individual must have the ability to multi-task, work in integrative team structures, and be autonomous.

  • Foster a vibrant and inclusive residential community by employing innovative ideas and approaches. 
  • Promote resident development as interdependent responsible community members who respect diversity and differences. Work effectively with a culturally diverse population of students to coach, mentor, and support dynamic needs. Employ educational principles to address concerns and encourage conflict resolution through mediation.
  • Proactively develop opportunities to engage diverse communities and build inclusive environments. Invest in relationships and programs to celebrate and support culturally diverse student populations.
  • Facilitate student belonging and safety in gender-inclusive and co-educational residential communities, fostering inclusive and equitable environments for LGBTQ+ residents.
  • Maintain high visibility and engagement with the student body and campus community at College events.
  • Supervise and provide coaching, development, and for up to three full-time Hall Directors.
  • Provide developmentally appropriate training, supervision, and evaluation of student staff, prioritizing community development, inclusion, and well-being.
  • Collaborate with other campus departments to enhance students’ curricular and co-curricular experiences as a way of supporting students’ transition to college, retention, academic success, social development, and overall wellness. 
  • Maintain up to date and accurate databases and systems (e.g., keys, rosters, etc.). Oversee maintenance, custodial services, and safety in assigned residence halls in collaboration with Facilities Management and Public Safety.
  • Effectively manage all financial resources for assigned hall(s).  
  • Provide leadership and support in crisis management situations, which includes rotational 24-hour on-call duty.
  • Assume administrative responsibility for an assigned Student Life collaborative assignment, encompassing 10+ hours per week developing programs, processes, policies, and procedures in the functional area. Functional area assignments are designated by the Associate Dean for Student Life and are subject to change.
  • Evaluate and assess programs, services, and curricula to match student learning outcomes and the mission of the Department and College. Design and implement results-based improvements.
  • Serve as a member of a collaborative and team-oriented Campus Life staff while supporting the mission and vision of Berea College and the Student Life division.
  • Role model the college motto, “God has made of one blood, all peoples of the Earth”.
  • Support and uphold Berea College’s policies and procedures and all aspects of the Student Handbook. 
  • Promote and model all Student Life professional standards.  
  • In support of Berea College’s great commitments this position requires student supervision.  The fourth great commitment is to promote learning and serving in community through the student labor program, honoring the dignity and utility of all work, mental and manual, and taking pride in work well done.  The Supervision would include scheduling, assigning and approving work performed.  Developing students about common workplace acumen and giving them tangible work experience is an expected outcome.
Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty and students. 

Experience required to ensure success in this position: 
• One year work experience in Higher Education Student Affairs related to student and program development OR a combination of relevant education and student leadership experience. 
• Experience working with college students.  
• Experience working with diverse groups, including support for LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and students from Appalachia.
• Wilderness First Aid and additional certifications are encouraged, but not required.
 
Special skills, knowledge and abilities: 
• Strong desire to build relationships with students, colleagues, and college partners.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication skills. 
• Commitment to inclusion and desire to work with diverse groups of people. Experience working with culturally diverse populations.

• Ability to work as part of a collaborative team. Strong desire to build relationships with students, colleagues, and college partners. 
• Knowledge of accounting principles (i.e., constructing and balancing budgets).
• Must be punctual and follow through on commitments.
• Ability to provide good customer service.
• Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
• Ability to work effectively in a team.
• Ability to manage technical software systems such as StarRez, Banner, and basic Microsoft Office.
• An understanding and appreciation for the liberal arts and residential colleges.
• A propensity for creativity and innovation, positive attitude, cultural competence, and creative problem-solving.
License, certification, or registration necessary: 
• Valid Driver’s License
 
Physical requirements: 
• Ability to work flexible and extended hours, including evening and weekend work hours.  
• Must have the physical dexterity and visual and auditory acuity to freely navigate various campus facilities and areas as required and to respond to and provide leadership in crisis situations (e.g., fire, tornados, acts of violence, etc.)  
 
Environmental conditions: 
• The position has a live-in requirement and requires completion of a lease agreement
• The position has regular evening and weekend office hours and on-call responsibilities.
• Must be willing to work in shared office space environment as part of team structure.
