Job Overview

The Access Coordinator serves as the primary resource for assigned colleges to enable student success in an accessible, inclusive educational and co-curricular university experience. This includes the assessment and determination of student accommodation requests as required by the Americans with Disability Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and other relevant state and local laws.  

 

Additionally, the Access Coordinator will serve as a resource to students, faculty, advisors, academic program directors, and college administrators to coordinate a holistic approach to full and equal access for the assigned colleges.  

 

This position coordinates individual services applicable to an assigned caseload; conducts educational presentations regarding disability/accessibility-related issues; and collaborates with the colleges to improve in the recruitment, retention, and success of students with disabilities.   

Essential Functions

  • Review disability documentation and conduct student interviews to determine eligibility for services and assignment of reasonable accommodations as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Collaborate with faculty, students, staff, and other campus partners to coordinate the delivery of accommodation and auxiliary services consistent with standards of practice in higher education.
  • Develops and delivers training materials and workshops to faculty and staff on providing appropriate academic accommodations and creating accessible environments.
  • Collaborate with faculty and college administrators to clarify the academic and technical standards and requirements of courses/programs for the purpose of determining reasonable accommodations.
  • Work directly with college leadership to influence processes and practices that contribute to an inclusive environment for individuals with disabilities in their academic programs.
  • Provide information about receiving accommodations to potential and current students through participation in orientations, program/school-specific events, and group presentations.
  • Maintain thorough and confidential records of contacts and communications with students and create service reports within data management system.
  • Counsel and advise students regarding academic goals, accommodations, and academic progress.
  • May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need. This job description can be changed at any time.

Required Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education, Psychology, Social Work or Social Services, Educational Leadership, Rehabilitation Counseling or related field
  • Seven (7) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement

Required Experience

Three (3) years of experience working with students with disabilities in an education environment or in disability compliance in a related setting

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling; higher education; educational administration; counseling; social work; social services; or related field.   
  • Experience working in higher education with students with disabilities.  
  • Demonstrated mastery of relevant legislation - Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). 
  • Two (2) or more years working in higher education with students with disabilities. 
  • Experience in evaluating documentation of disability, determining eligibility for services and accommodations, and generating a plan for the provisions of services and accommodations. 
  • Demonstrated inter-cultural competence, and a continuing commitment to advance equity, inclusion, and social justice practices in support of a diverse community. 
  • Demonstrated integrity and ability to handle complex, sensitive, and confidential issues. 
  • Experience in developing and facilitating professional training for faculty and staff.  

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • Office environment/no specific unusual physical or environmental demands.
