DIRECTOR OF CAREER SERVICES, Pardee School of Global Studies (23500584980301)

Tracking Code: 23500584980301

Job Description
The Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies is seeking a Director of Career Services to position our graduating MA students to compete more effectively in the job market. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Studies and working closely with the Director of Student Affairs and Services, the inaugural director will be responsible for developing, implementing and leading the School's career services functions and helping to establish an envisioned Pardee Global Career Center. Because the Director oversees career education for a broad range of MA students, they must be an expert on employment trends, employment sectors, and individual employers. The Director establishes and maintains contacts with people in all employment sectors in the US and globally. Since Pardee is still a young school, and our students compete with graduates from other International Affairs schools as well as graduates of public policy, MBA, and other programs, the Director must be able to articulate to domestic and international employers the strengths of the Pardee School and the benefits of hiring Pardee graduates. The Director must be able to expand Pardee's Career Services reach by establishing strategic partnerships across Boston University and by networking effectively with a broad range of people at all levels.

This role includes the following specific responsibilities:
  • Conceive and implement a program of career readiness supports for Pardee's approximately 90 MA students from the United States and other countries all over the world, including career fairs, career readiness workshops, career trips, networking events, and other offerings.
  • Conduct employer outreach and work with potential employers in the United States as well as abroad to encourage recruitment of Pardee School graduates.
  • Work with Student Services staff to help implement PardeeWorks programming, such as career panels and visiting speakers, for Pardee School students.
  • Promote and prepare students for competitive fellowships and employment programs, such as the Presidential Management Fellowship, Foreign Service exam, and Junior Professional Associates program.
  • Partner with Development and Alumni Relations to strengthen our alumni network and to provide contacts and resources for students looking for jobs and internships.
  • Maintain strong relations and communication with the BU Center for Career Development, Pardee School Programs and Centers, and other Campus Stakeholders.
  • Manage relationships external clients, with potential donors, and with alumni of the School on potential employment matters.
  • Over the coming 2-3 years, help establish a Pardee Global Careers Center through recruiting, hiring, and managing additional staff.
  • Work with the Director of Finance and Administration to establish the career services budget.
  • Ensure that Pardee Career Services is represented prominently online, in publications, and at external events and conferences.
  • Provide reports for Board Meetings and other Stakeholders.
  • Ensure that student data is accurate and confidential, and that employment data is reported correctly per industry standards.
  • Prepare students to compete in the international affairs workforce and reflect positively on the BU Pardee name and brand.

Required Skills
A cover letter is required for consideration.

  • Master's degree with 5-8 years of experience required.
  • Minimum 3 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in career development programs in higher education or related industry, including working with graduate students seeking employment.
  • Deep understanding of career opportunities for international affairs graduates across a range of sectors: public, private, and nonprofit.
  • Well-honed networking skills, with contacts among potential employers in international affairs, and the willingness and ability to progressively expand such networks.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • Strong sense of creativity, entrepreneurship and personal initiative, with experience developing and launching new programs and processes.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, including the ability to maintain positive working relationships with all members of the academic community, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other stakeholders.
  • Commitment to principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and experience working with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills, including public speaking, presentations, and workshop facilitation.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize short- and long-term tasks, and juggle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with Symplicity, Handshake or other career services software.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with international students, and familiarity with legal issues related to employment of international students (OPT, CPT, H1-B, etc).
  • Familiarity with the recruiting process for the federal government and other public sector agencies.
  • Higher education experience, including experience working with graduate students.
  • Experience hiring staff for new positions and building a team from the ground up.
