Department Information

The Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) is an important department in the College of Arts and Sciences (the College). We serve students and the community by advancing innovative basic and applied research in communication sciences and disorders for the purpose of knowledge acquisition, student education, professional training, and clinical practice.

We offer educational experiences at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Seven of our faculty are Deaf and teach ASL at the undergraduate level. Many of our other faculty are clinicians in the areas of audiology and speech-language pathology, and many hold research PhDs.

Job Summary

This position coordinates important aspects of the graduate programs in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, including the specific criteria for each of the 3 distinct graduate programs (MA in Speech-Language Pathology, Doctorate of Audiology, and PhD).

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Oversees the processing and evaluation of all applications for admission (350 to 400 per year) and monitors the progress of nearly 150 enrolled students
  • Assists with coordinating recruitment and orientation efforts (e.g., including the department's open house and coordination with programs to attract diverse students, such as the GettingU2IU program)
  • Helps to assign and administer student academic appointments and fellowships
  • Helps to coordinate the review and awarding of graduate student awards (e.g., works with the College or University to coordinate submission of awards)
  • Monitors the progress of enrolled students, including maintenance of graduate student academic records; helps students understand program requirements, university policies, and career options; processes graduate student academic records and confirms that graduating students have met course and program requirements
  • Supports the Directors of Graduate Studies in maintaining both bulletins (UGS and College)
  • Works with students to confidentially resolve issues or alerts the department's graduate program coordinators regarding complex or worrisome situations
  • Collaborates with the fiscal Officer and the graduate program coordinators to analyze and provide student academic and outcome data needed for training grant proposals and reports for funding agencies and internal and external administrative committees and offices
  • Monitors other graduate student information, as requested by various IU committees and offices (e.g., requests for lists of all students' international training experiences)
  • Maintains contact with past graduates to understand job placement
  • Acts as a liaison with the University Graduate School, College Graduate Office, Office of the Registrar, and the Office of International Student Services
  • Advises graduate students and potential students concerning academic affairs, including application and pre-requisite requirements for the graduate programs
  • Serves as a critical resource for students and faculty on general (University Graduate School) degree requirements and specific requirements of the SLHS graduate programs and on minors required for SLHS PhD students
  • Serves as resource to graduate students concerning visa issues
  • May serve as initial contact for graduate students dealing with sensitive confidential issues, including but not limited to: academic issues, financial issues, conflicts or adverse interactions with other students or faculty, and sexual harassment
  • Manages Chair's schedule; manages department-wide re-accreditation for the Council on Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD) as well as CAPCSD surveys and annual reports; manages correspondence (e.g., review and promotion processes); trains on various systems and supports their usage (e.g., eDossier, CarMIN)

General Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements programs and initiatives that touch on various/multiple student-related goals, such as enhancing and reinforcing academic engagement and experiential learning; increasing student engagement, wellness, and involvement; fostering learning, inclusion, and development; supporting students in crisis and adversity; and improving the student campus experience
  • Interfaces directly with students by attending student programming events, advising student organization leaders, meeting one-on-one to discuss areas of concern on campus, and gathering satisfaction feedback from student participants to implement into future student services initiatives and objectives
  • Collaborates with staff in own department and other departments, as well as academic and campus leaders, on shared student services goals, often coordinating funding to sponsor student programs and initiatives
  • Projects outcomes for services offered at the program, department/division, or campus level; measures and evaluates effectiveness of student services against projected outcomes; may prepare reports on impact to students and budget and may present to stakeholders on effectiveness and to secure funding for initiatives moving forward
  • May serve on committees and perform student services research across the field of higher education and at peer institutions to identify and recommend best practices
  • Plans and coordinates communications for student services initiatives to ensure student participation and engagement

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in public affairs, counseling, social work, education, business, or related field

Preferred

  • Master's degree in higher education student affairs or related field

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Some experience in student services, higher education, or related field

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to set priorities and multitask
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and be discrete
  • Knowledge of the Spanish language

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
