The Assistant Athletic Trainer serves the Department of Athletics and Physical Education in the Division of Academic Affairs. The position reports to the Head Athletic Trainer and supports the mission of the College in its focus on preparing students to become leaders of character and influence in an interdependent global community. This is a ten (10) month position with benefits that includes morning, evening, and weekend responsibilities. The Assistant Athletic Trainer is a member of the athletic training staff responsible for providing high-quality care for the student-athletes participating on the 23 NCAA Division III varsity teams. The primary objective is to help provide the safest possible sports experience for the student-athletes by preventing as many injuries as possible, and properly managing the injuries that do occur. By promoting the health of the student-athlete, it enhances their sports experience as well as the overall success of the athletic program. Additional responsibilities may be assigned in areas such as teaching, committee work, and administration.

ESSENTIAL DEPARTMENTAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Provide athletic training services (including initial injury evaluation and care and creating and overseeing therapy plans and post-surgical rehabilitation protocols) for the College’s varsity athletic programs, including attendance at scheduled team practices and home and away competitions as necessary.
  • Coordinate and schedule medical referrals for student-athletes to determine their ability to practice and compete safely.
  • Work successfully with the Student Wellness Center, team physicians, and coaches to assure effective communication and continuity of care.
  • Evaluate and recommend new techniques and equipment that would enhance the sports medicine program.
  • Assist with coordinating athletic injury insurance claims.
  • Assist in administrative operations including medical documentation, policy/procedure revision, budget management, and ordering equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with hiring, scheduling, orientation, and training of student athletic training room assistants.
  • Evaluate and provide first aid and initial injury management for non-varsity athletes through the Student Wellness Center.
  • Attend education symposiums and meetings to assure professional development and fulfill continuing education requirements.
  • Assist with supervision of approximately 35 student athletic training room assistants.

 

Other Expectations

  • Serve as an active member of the athletic department’s team, responsible for providing leadership, goals, and program implementation to our nearly 2,000 undergraduate students and 600 student-athletes.
  • Develop and maintain mutually supportive and collaborative working relationships with coaches, student affairs colleagues, faculty, and other campus partners to accomplish shared objectives and tasks.
  • Develop meaningful connections with students, staff and faculty by being available and visible on campus.
  • Engage team members in service activities both on campus and in the surrounding community.
  • Create a welcoming environment emphasizing inclusion and the development of diverse identities, beliefs, and voices.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and compliance with the College’s and Department of Athletics and Physical Education policies and procedures as well as the NCAC and NCAA constitutions, bylaws, legislation and regulations.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the priorities and ideals of The College of Wooster and the Department of Athletics and Physical Education.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer and/or Director (Associate) Director of Athletics and Physical Education.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  • National Athletic Trainers’ Association BOC Certification required.
  • Ohio Licensure required.
  • Collegiate athletic trainer experience strongly preferred.
  • CPR, AED, & First Aid Certification (Instructor Certification Preferred).

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

KNOWLEDGE: (Math, Computer/Technology)

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Basic Word/Excel and ability to learn and operate recruiting software.

 

SKILLS: (Language, communication, reading and reasoning)  

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.  Must have the ability to interact in a sensitive, courteous, and understanding way with members of a diverse academic community, including students, faculty, staff, and the general public.  
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  
  • Ability to write reports and correspondence.   
  • Ability to speak effectively and professionally with students, faculty and staff, and the public.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.  
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.          
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.  Ability to deal with sensitive matters confidentially.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Athletic Trainers are required to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, or holidays.
  • Travel for athletic contests, convention/caucus attendance is required.
  • The ability to obtain College driver certification is desirable. 
  • Some heavy lifting / moving equipment is required.
  • While performing the duties of this job, Athletic Trainers regularly travel in outside weather conditions and are exposed to wet or humid conditions, extreme temperatures, dirt, and dust.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
