Assistant Dean for Multicultural and Student Affairs  

Job Summary: Under supervision from the Associate Dean for Multicultural and Student Affairs, the Assistant Dean for Multicultural and Student Affairs provides strategic vision and oversight for all activities and programs of the Office of Multicultural and Student Affairs. The focus of this position is to uphold all student code of conduct policies, including the Honor Code, Student Code of Conduct, Student Organizations, and Student Sexual Misconduct Policy. The Assistant Dean regularly interfaces with faculty, staff, students, parents, and alumni, providing training, advice, and counsel, and—when appropriate—in the capacity of directly administering and enforcing policies and related sanctions.

The Assistant Dean for Multicultural and Student Affairs reviews, investigates, addresses, or refers potential professionalism cases; ensures operations comply with all applicable policies, procedures, and regulations; and serves as a liaison with numerous campus units and organizations to maintain cross-collaboration on Multicultural and Student Affairs policies. Additionally, the Assistant Dean will serve on many committees as assigned. The Assistant Dean supports the strategic goals of the Office of Multicultural and Student Affairs.

 

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Shares in the responsibility of offering student guidance, and counseling
  • Deals appropriately with student professionalism issues based on WVSOM policies and procedures;
  • Supports the Associate Dean of Multicultural and Student Affairs in offering faculty, staff, and student development;
  • Supports the Associate Dean with the development and delivery of all diversity equity and inclusion and interpersonal violence prevention education and awareness; 
  • Addresses student, faculty, or staff complaints and resolves conflict and deals effectively, empathetically, diplomatically, fairly, and non-judgmentally with students;
  • Assists in the development of robust student services programming for the entire student body; 
  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures for the Office of Student Affairs, including annual updates to the Student Handbook;
  • Working knowledge of WVSOM policies and ability to effectively apply them in the role;
  • Under the guidance of the Associate Dean, the Assistant Dean will assist in the development of Multicultural and Wellness programming and activities for the WVSOM campus;
  • The Assistant Dean will serve as an Advisor for student honors programs and provides oversight at many high-profile student events and activities, including Student Orientation;  
  • Serves as external liaison for WVSOM with various community organizations, as well as numerous state and national organizations with a focus on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Student Affairs;
  • Trained and serves as a Title IX investigator and Advisor;
  • Assists with student and institutional events as requested;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Position:  This is a full-time non-classified position with full state benefits and is exempt from FLSA provisions regarding overtime.  Not all activities of this position occur within the confines of an 8:00-4:30 schedule and may require evening and weekend scheduling. This position has been designated as Essential. This means that when WVSOM is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover and continue operations at WVSOM.

Qualifications: An advanced degree (master’s, Ph.D., JD, or equivalent) in student development, higher education administration, law, or a related field and a progressive record of four or more years of professional experience in student affairs within a college or university setting are required. Experience with DEI preferred. A combination of recent and related experience may be considered.  Additional requirements include: demonstrated knowledge of student development and student conduct processes, as well as applicable laws including FERPA, Clery, Title IX, VAWA, and Campus SaVE; well-developed advising skills; experience adjudicating policy violations; and excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated experience working effectively with students, faculty, student organizations, student affairs colleagues, public safety, and other campus constituents, as well as with alumni, parents, legal representatives, and external community members is essential for success. Strong conflict resolution and diplomacy skills; attention to detail; critical thinking ability; facility using current technology and social media; and evidence of working cooperatively and collaboratively with others in a diverse, complex environment will also be important considerations in the selection of the Assistant Dean for Multicultural and Student Affairs.
