Established in 1958, North Central Michigan College (NCMC) was created to ensure that education beyond high school be available, financially possible, and conveniently located for learners in Emmet County. Initially learners attended NCMC from Michigan's tip of the mitt, however, currently the population of student learners are even more geographically diverse. Over the next several decades, programs included liberal and studio arts, nursing, allied health, criminal justice, data processing and many more continue to evolve to the present day. A 207-acre campus was established in 1960 in Petoskey, and the first buildings were opened just three years later. In 1973, College education centers were added in Cheboygan and Gaylord.
The last two decades have seen the construction of the Student and Community Resource Center (SCRC), the Health Education and Science Center (HESC), and renovation of the Library/Conference Center. What's more, the spectacular Harris Sculpture Garden was built, featuring world-class art especially commissioned from across the country. During this time, University Center partnerships were formalized, the new mobile digital Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab) la...unched, and the College garnered Achieving the Dream Leader College distinction.
In 2020 NCMC enrolled nearly 1800 students in credit-bearing courses, offering 24 Associate Degrees and 39 Certificates, leading to careers in business and industry, as well as the health, human services, and education fields. Other exceptional programs include the creative arts, natural sciences, and the social sciences. An Early College partnership with area high schools enables students to obtain their high school diploma and associate degree simultaneously. Life on campus is vibrant, led by Student Senate and Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society.
Financial aid awarded in 2017-18 totaled nearly $6 million, with 80% of students receiving such assistance. Since 1960, NCMC has awarded more than 11,000 total credentials (degrees or certificates) to more than 10,000 students. Droves of other learners receive non-credit skills training through the Corporate and Community Education Division. With more than 230 employees and an annual budget of nearly $16 million, the College has a significant economic impact in northern Michigan. Building upon its solid foundation, NCMC strives to be impactful in the coming decades.
