General Summary: The Assistant Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs will have a key role in assisting the Provost/Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs in the planning and directing of all departments in the Division of Academic and Student Affairs. To promote equity, student access, retention, success, and persistence, the Assistant Vice President will promote the integration of the mission and work of all departments in Academic and Student Affairs, realizing the collaborative vision to serve the whole student.

The Division of Academic and Student Affairs encompasses extensive services and activities for MCC students provided by some of the following areas:

  • Five academic areas led by Academic Deans - STEM; Health; Liberal Arts and Online Learning; Business/Legal Studies/Public Service; Education and K-16 Partnerships.
  • Student Conduct and Development - Student Engagement; Wellness and Counseling; team crisis management; grievances, grade appeals, and violations of academic dishonesty; policy and procedure compliance.
  • Student Support Services - Student Access and Support Services, TRIO Programs, and Wellness and Counseling.  
  • Academic Support programming, including tutoring
  • Student Equity International and Multicultural Affairs including the AANAPISI grant and the Veteran Resource Center
  • Advising and Academic Pathways
  • Enrollment Services
  • Library, Grants Office, and Institutional Research

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • With the Provost, provide vision and direction in developing, implementing, and assessing the relevant goals of the College's strategic plan, With Equity at Its Core.
  • Provide input for policies and procedures that advance the College's mission and goals to support a diverse body of students as they pursue their educational and career goals
  • Assist the Provost in the implementation of annual and long-range plans for academic and student services, including program planning and assessment activities.
  • Collaborate with personnel from other departments, Academic and Student Affairs Divisions to ensure effective program implementation
  • Function as part of the Provost's leadership team, serving on appropriate working groups, councils, committees, and task forces 
  • Represent MCC at community and outside organization functions
  • Promote and maintain positive and responsive community relations
  • Maintain current knowledge of trends and practices in the field through peer association, attendance at seminars, student, and review of literature
  • Assist the Provost and deans on NECHE and other accreditation reports
  • Address employee relations issues through consultation with Human Resources while ensuring alignment with collective bargaining agreements and personnel handbooks
  • Resolve student, faculty, and staff issues that may arise; collaborate with others as necessary to achieve resolution.  Oversee faculty and student grievance procedures and insure adherence to college affirmative action and Title IX policies.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned


Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Master's degree and five to seven years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Understanding of and commitment to the role of the community college in higher education
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Provost, faculty, professional staff, and students through an equity-centered and asset-based mindset.
  • Experience with equity-minded work and/or understanding of individuals of diverse identities such as race, ethnicity, socio-economic level, sexual orientation, veterans, and individuals with different academic preparation levels and varying physical and learning abilities.
  • Commitment to the mission and philosophy of the College
  • Leadership, financial management, and supervisory skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; to establish positive public relations; and to interact effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to discuss highly sensitive issues with empathy and respect, and to resolve conflict in a fair and equitable manner
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain the highest ethical standards and levels of confidentiality
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and sometimes conflicting priorities  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual skills a plus, Spanish or Khmer 


Additional Information:

Salary Range: $120,000 - $130,000 actual salary commensurate with academic background and experience. Employees of Middlesex Community College are considered employees of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and receive benefits, which include:
