Job Description:

The Executive Director of Residential Life provides visionary leadership, strategic planning and effective management of operations for the Department of Residential Life. The Executive Director is responsible for the personnel, budget and administrative operations for the Department of Residential Life.

All leadership and planning led by the Executive Director must reflect the University's mission, the mission and values of the Division of Student Affairs, and CAS standards for Residence Life. The Executive Director must foster and demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion in all components of their work and provide a healthy, secure, and academically supportive environment for students.

The position is responsible for:

  • Managing the systems and strategic planning associated with campus housing assignments and meal plans
  • Development and implementation of a residential learning curriculum
  • Recruitment and retention of residence hall students
  • Monitoring and enforcement of housing/dining policies and procedures
  • Providing data interpretation which informs and supports institutional decision-making
  • Supervising (directly or indirectly) all personnel in the Department of Residential Life:
    • Hire, train, and evaluate staff
    • Monitor job performance and workload
    • Assign office tasks and responsibilities
  • Providing leadership in:
    • Development of collaborative partnerships with a variety of constituent groups, (e.g., students, families, academic colleges, governing groups, service/program areas and administrative leadership, etc.)
    • On-going development and implementation of residential technology and StarRez
    • Implementation of safety and security plans for the residence halls and Garvey Commons
    • Department, division and institutional strategic planning, CAS-based program review activities, and assessment and learning outcome efforts
    • Evaluating departmental assessment results and determining modifications to departmental goals and objectives consistent with the University's strategic plan
  • Directing the implementation, maintenance and oversight of the processes involved in major functions such as residential learning curriculum, student leadership organizations, and guidance and education of community standards
  • Department budget management and disbursement of funds to sustain sound fiscal status:
    • Prepare annual operating budget and capital improvement budget
    • Oversee financial operations, including budget control and resource allocation
    • Monitor income and expenditures
    • Development of room and board rates in consultation with student governance bodies, Residence Hall Advisory Council and Student Government Association, for approval by the President and Board of Trustees
  • Monitoring appropriate contracts with vendors in cooperation with Business Services:
    • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of new contracts,
    • Planning and implementation of conference housing initiatives.
  • Planning, organizing, establishing, and directing student housing applications and assignments, residential meal plans, room configurations, billing and all record keeping functions
  • Developing, implementing, and maintaining policies and procedures for student housing operations and a comprehensive facility plan:
    • Provide long-range strategic and capital expenditure planning and implementation strategies, including physical plan
    • Maintain confidentiality and security requirements
    • Keep abreast of new developments related to student housing and dining in higher education, business operations, and technology
    • Collaborate with other university personnel on technology implementation, functionality and training to support business processes and university operations
  • Providing assistance and information to students, families, and university personnel:
    • Provide emergency on-call support and, as needed, in major campus crises
    • Serve as a resource and consultant to the campus community on issues related to student housing and dining
  • Collection and organization of data and interpretation of this information to support a course of action pertaining to housing assignments, meal plans, resource management, and institutional decision making

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, Business Administration or related
  • 5 years of progressively responsible administrative and leadership experience in a higher education setting, including previous experience in residential life
  • 3 years of experience supervising professional staff
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in residence hall operations, community development, and residential living
  • Strong financial management, analysis, strategic planning, and budgeting skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to use technology for information processing
  • Ability to interact and collaborate with multiple and diverse groups of people and a commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment
  • Ability to adapt to changing conditions and to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Evidence of demonstrated ability to work with persons from culturally diverse backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of database management and data interpretation skills
  • Knowledge of relevant federal and state regulations related to higher education
  • Evidence of high utilization and knowledge of student information systems such as StarRez
  • Experience in facility construction management, maintenance, repair, and renovation
  • Experience working with dining operations
  • Experience creating and implementing residential learning curriculum
