Position title: Associate Dean for Educational Technology, Innovation & Assessment Salary range: The posted UC Salary scales set the minimum pay at the appointment as determined by appointment type and if applicable, rank and/or step. The base pay range for this position is $120k to 300k. Salary is negotiated annually. Position description

The Division of Medical Education at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine (https://medschool.ucsd.edu/education/undergrad/Pages/default.aspx) is recruiting for an Associate Dean for Assessment, Evaluation and Educational Informatics to lead a cross-functional team.

Under the guidance of the Vice Dean for Medical Education and in collaboration with other Associate and Assistant Deans, the Chief Information Officer, Health Sciences faculty and staff, they will provide strategic direction for assessment and evaluation initiatives, while leveraging informatics to facilitate educational innovation and continuous quality improvement.

  • Provide leadership and oversight for faculty and staff working directly on medical student assessment and competency development, directing initiatives to improve assessment based on outcomes data and analysis.
    o Provide strategic guidance for implementing programmatic assessment.
    o Work closely with other Division of Medical Education Leaders to provide visualization of assessment data from multiple sources and develop dashboards to portray competency achievement.
    o Develop and maintain dashboards to facilitate coaching and advising.
    o Design ways to optimally portray competency and other data in the Medical Student Performance Evaluation to facilitate the Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) to Graduate Medical Education (GME) transition.
    o Collaborate with other Associate and Assistant deans to develop and implement a vision for linking the continuum of assessment data from UME to GME.
    o Provide direction to medical education faculty and staff on the production, scoring, and analysis of various assessments.
    o Identify opportunities to leverage clinical informatics tools, like the electronic health record, to monitor competency development in UME and GME in partnership with the Medical Director for Educational Informatics.
    o Provide training opportunities for faculty on principles of competency based medical education and programmatic assessment in partnership with the Associate Dean for Continuing Medical Education and Faculty Development.
  • Provide leadership and direction for staff and faculty in the design, implementation and analysis of evaluations.
    o Facilitate continuous quality improvement of educational programs based on outcomes data and analysis.
    o Develop and maintain faculty evaluation dashboards to advance teaching quality and professionalism.
    o Align internal evaluation processes with Liaison Committee on Medical Education requirements in partnership with the Assistant Dean, Curricular Affairs and Accreditation.
  • Serve as a thought leader in the design and delivery of instructional technology.
    o Collaborate and strategize with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education and other divisional leaders to oversee the integration of instructional technology (e.g., iPads, CANVAS, MedHub, ProgressIQ, ExamSoft, etc.) within the School of Medicine curricula.
    o Assist with the systematic review, evaluation, and where appropriate, revision, and optimization of educational technology.
    o Ensure technology infrastructure meets, and ideally exceed the goals of technology-enhanced curricula.
    o Work with university and health system partners as needed to adopt new and emerging technologies.
    o Provide training opportunities for faculty to ensure the best use of technology.
  • Collaborate and strategize with the Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs to leverage data-driven applicant evaluation and selection tools in alignment with the mission of the School of Medicine.
  • Provide oversight of curricular mapping, ensuring all session and course objectives map to institutional competencies in partnership with the Assistant Dean, Curricular Affairs and Accreditation.
  • Meet regularly with administrative leaders and health sciences faculty to advance assessment, evaluation and educational informatics priorities.
  • Participate in and meaningfully contribute to appropriate School of Medicine policy and planning committees and meetings, including but not limited to the Medical Education Core Leadership Team Meeting, Deans and Directors Meeting, Committee on Educational Policy.
  • Set vision, priorities and goals for the Assessment, Evaluation and Educational Informatics unit and provide work direction to team members as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the effective performance management of the staff in the Assessment, Evaluation and Educational Informatics unit, including but not limited to annual performance evaluations.
  • Work collaboratively with the Assistant Dean for Education Administration ensure all administrative, financial and operational items are appropriately managed.
  • Lead educational research and scholarship initiatives related to assessment, evaluation and educational informatics to ensure clinical programs are well integrated with and positioned to service the UCSD community.
  • Teaching and mentorship of trainees, along with service activities in a clinical setting.

    The chosen candidate would be expected to be appointed as a faculty member in an academic department within the School of Medicine, as aligned best with their clinical and/or scholarly interests and expertise. Teaching, scholarly efforts and service would be commensurate with the departmental requirements for all faculty.

    Basic qualifications (Required at Time of Application)

    The candidate must have a terminal degree or equivalent (e.g., MD, DO, PhD or EDD) The candidate must also have excellent interpersonal communication and leadership skills, with a strong ability to work collaboratively

    Preferred qualifications

    Advanced training in medical education is preferred.
