DESCRIPTION

The UCSD Mathematics Department is a dynamic unit with 67 faculty, approximately 30 additional non-FTEs in various instructional and research titles. These academics work on a broad range research funded from a diverse range of federal, state and private agencies. The department is comprised of 23 career staff, and 190 Master's and Ph.D. students. All working together to generate high caliber research in a broad range of fields and provides an outstanding graduate program that attracts top-ranked students who contribute to the department's academic reputation. The department maintains a large undergraduate course of study that prepares pure and applied majors (over 2400) in Mathematics, as well as 57 other majors across the campus, with the strong fundamental background in mathematics needed to succeed in a variety of career options.

The faculty are engaged in a vigorous research program with an average of 72 active awards in many interdisciplinary areas totaling approximately $20M/Yr. and an instructional program that enrolls approximately 40,000 graduates and undergraduates per year. As the fundamental language of science, Mathematics is an essential intellectual tool required by a trained workforce to create the technological advances of the future. The department is the home of The Center for Computational Mathematics (CCoM). It consists of a broad and diverse group of faculty, researchers, and students, who share a common interest in the mathematical aspects of computation. The department is also the home of the Director of the Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project, an intersegmental education project in California.

Using skills as a seasoned, experienced student services professional, provides the full range of student services within an organization such as an academic department, school, or college. Independently advises students and resolves student services-related issues on the full range of academic issues inherent within the organization. Advises faculty and management on a variety of student issues. Works with the department's / school's / college's management to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures. Guidance on issues requiring in-depth knowledge of specialized programs is provided by offices specializing in those fields, e.g., the financial aid office, graduate division, or student learning center, OR by the chair / dean and faculty of the department / school / college. May administer funds for student programs.

The Student Affairs Manager in the Math Department collaborates, consults, and reports to the Director of Student & Instructional Services to manage operations and personnel for undergraduate advising, graduate advising, and curriculum/planning areas. This position is charged with the daily operation, administration, and management of the three areas within student affairs and actively participates in the development and implementation of new advising programs, policies, and procedures affecting Math undergraduate students, graduate students, and non-math majors enrolled in Math courses.

The incumbent assumes full responsibility for the management of the unit in the absence of the Director of Student & Instructional Services and represents Math student affairs at divisional and campus levels. Other important responsibilities include the initiation, leadership, oversight, and coordination of student engagement, student career development, and alumni relations activities. Responsible for designing, enhancing, and collaborating with staff to coordinate advising procedures and editing standard advising communications/ publications (printed, emails, and web). Participate in short and long-term planning affecting student affairs for the Math department.

  • Occasional weekends/evenings may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of academic advising and counseling techniques. Comprehensive understanding of academic programs, processes, and operations in a large public research university. Ability to analyze individual cases and make independent decisions based on professional knowledge and academic senate, university, and campus policies and procedures. High-level critical thinking and interpretive skills to analyze situations, define problems, identify concerns, develop, propose, and implement solutions.
