This position is located on the main UCSC campus and may be considered for partial remote work (subject to the terms of a telecommuting agreement). While telecommuting/remote working, the employee is responsible for ensuring a worksite environment suitable for accomplishing their job duties during scheduled hours of work and, if applicable, arranging for dependent care just as they would if they were working in person at a UCSC worksite.

NOTIFICATIONS

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Colleges, Housing and Educational Services (CHES) is a multi-funded organization within the Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS) at the University of California (UC) Santa Cruz. CHES provides leadership in the areas of college student life and residential services, housing services, facilities, employee housing and capital planning, dining services, conference services, early education services, the Bay Tree Campus store, and business and financial analysis for these areas. Through these units, educational and developmental programs and services are offered to all members of the campus community including students, faculty, staff, children and external constituents. Student Housing Services (SHS), a subunit of CHES, includes a Marketing and Communications team, which develops comprehensive marketing, communications, and Public Relations strategies on behalf of CHES departments, programs, and services.

JOB SUMMARY

The Visual Communications Supervisor, under the direction of the Marketing and Communications Manager, is responsible for the creation of visual communication deliverables for Colleges, Housing and Educational Services (CHES) and Student Housing Services, develops and applies creative solutions for a multitude of marketing and communications initiatives. In addition to hands-on work creating concepts, this position also provides leadership and stewards the design process from concept to completion, includes supervision of design staff, provides guidance and direction on complex visual communications issues, sets performance expectations, and evaluates results. The Visual Communications Supervisor provides priority setting and work flow analysis to help the design team stay on schedule, meet deadlines, and respond to changing needs.

Budgeted Salary: $87,000 / annually

Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation rate for this role and should not offer a salary above the posted rate. The salary shown above is the rate the University reasonably expects to pay.

JOB DUTIES

40% - Visual Design
  • Conceptualizes, designs, and oversee production of marketing materials.
  • Leads the visual communication and design process from concept to completion.
  • Assess complex or otherwise challenging written material and data and devise the best ways to present it visually to enhance its clarity and impact.
  • Develops visual themes that strengthen the communication of ideas and information.
  • Supervises development and creation of files, graphics, and/or illustrations for visual media, including print and the web, in conjunction with implementation of broader long and short term strategic communications plans and/or projects.
  • Supervises production of quality visual products that effectively deliver the desired message within pre-determined budget and time constraints.


20% - Consultation, Research, and Planning
  • Consults with clients and the marketing team to assess needs and objectives, and develop strategies to meet those needs through the appropriate use of visual marketing and communication.
  • Develops, presents, and recommends design concepts and visual material.
  • Works closely with the Marketing Communications team to align visual communications projects with the organizational communication and marketing plan.
  • Develops schedules, tracks progress, and collaborates with project contributors to ensure milestones and deliverables are aligned and deadlines are met.


20% - Design Team Leadership and Supervision
  • Directly supervises career staff. Hires, trains, coaches, sets performance standards and completes performances appraisals.
  • Motivates staff and recognizes day-to-day achievements. Initiates corrective and disciplinary personnel actions when necessary.
  • Assists staff in setting priorities that support overall unit goals. Manages staff workflow and monitor progress on projects ensuring that standards and production deadlines are met. Leads the design team in producing high-quality deliverables.
  • Provides appropriate opportunities and encouragement for staff participation in trainings and professional development.


15% - Photography and Video
  • Shoots photography and video. Also directs staff and student employees in shooting photos and video.
  • Edits photos and video. Also directs staff and student employees to edit photos and video.
  • Maintains CHES Marketing Communications photo and video library with current media.
  • As appropriate, shares photography with other campus units to help promote CHES and the UCSC campus life experience.
  • Archives photos and videos as needed to streamline the library and remove material that is out of date.


5% - Other Duties as Assigned
  • Performs miscellaneous administrative duties in support of marketing-related and university objectives.
  • As an individual and as a team member, assists in the development of continuous improvement to policies, procedures, and customer service.
  • Stays current with design trends and connect with the design community.
  • Represents Student Housing Services as a member of campus committees and task forces, as well as professional conferences and workshops.
  • Assumes additional projects and responsibilities in response to emerging issues.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Required
  • Demonstrated ability to create concepts and designs at an exceptional level, and to be able to identify, set and articulate design standards, present concepts to clients, and produce results on time and within budget.
  • Solid knowledge of all aspects of visual communications, and sufficient knowledge and understanding of technical applications and their capabilities including design concepts, various media, applications, strategic planning, etc. to effectively manage / supervise professional technical staff
  • Advanced design, creative and artistic skills, with expert level understanding of typography, color theory, and composition principles.
  • Advanced knowledge of digital tools for visual communications including Adobe Creative Suite. Familiarity with standard communications tools including Google and Microsoft suites.
  • Advanced interpersonal communications skills, including active listening skills and skills to work effectively within teams and to effectively provide advanced design advice and consultation to clients on all aspects of visual communications.
  • The ability to inspire, influence, guide and/or conduct members of a work unit or team to achieve a desired behavior or result.
  • The ability to set and communicate performance standards to employees; the ability to evaluate employees based on measurable behavior or results; the ability to give ongoing performance feedback and formal performance appraisals.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to complete assignments accurately and on time with a high attention to detail amidst frequent interruptions and shifting priorities.
  • Solid knowledge of the organization, including its mission, vision, goals, policies, practices and infrastructure.
  • Solid knowledge of the trends and developments in the visual communications field.
  • High level of intercultural fluency; demonstrated insight, tact, and diplomacy in dealing with diverse populations within the organization and corresponding communities.
  • Substantial years of creative work and knowledge of print, digital, video and graphic design standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to give presentations to diverse constituents at all levels of an organization.
  • Demonstrated skill in problem recognition, avoidance and resolution.
