Departmental Overview

In the Division of Student Affairs and under the Residential Student Services Programs portfolio, Cal Dining is a self-operated dining program focused on culinary excellence, social responsibility and supporting the living/learning environment of our customers. With more than 12,000 meal plan holders, Cal Dining serves over 5 million meals per year in 14 facilities with a combination of residential 'all you care to eat' dining, retail 'a la carte' dining, stadium concession, training table, early childhood education meal production and catering. Cal Dining services the campus seven days per week, seventeen hours per day employing 450 full and part time staff and approximately 400 Cal student workers across multiple locations.

The primary emphasis of this position focuses on business management practices (i.e. operations management, financial controls including profit generation, human resource managements, interdepartmental relations, research and development, and project management.) This position is responsible for overseeing and directing the catering program for UC Berkeley within Dining. The Director of catering reports to the Executive Director of Cal Dining. This position directs the operations for all onsite and offsite catering functions, provides supplemental support for the Summer conference program, and operates Cal Dining's home meal replacement (HMR) program. This position is responsible for a five million dollar operational budget and is charged with incrementally growing revenue to account for all on campus catering needs. This position also supports all other dining functions and revenue centers and must collaborate with others that manage the retail and residential programs. The Director of Catering is responsible for developing and implementing accountability controls of management staff and working closely with staff to ensure maximum operational efficiency and effective of implemented programs.

Responsibilities
  • Provides comprehensive direction and oversight for all aspects of event management including personnel and financial administration.
  • Provides strategic guidance in upscaling production to fit the campus needs.
  • Through subordinates, manages a diverse variety of events, ranging from small events with complex guest lists to large, campuswide events requiring coordination of multiple internal and external resources.
  • Confers with broad based constituencies regarding comprehensive event policies, master schedules, and strategic planning.
  • Selects, trains, leads, directs, mentors, evaluates and, as required, takes corrective action with subordinate professional staff.
  • Ensures that client and institutional needs are met through production of high quality events.
  • May serve as high level event consultant to senior management.
  • Provides guidance to subordinate professional staff on the more complex and sensitive events issues.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining contract terms and conditions.
  • Updates and maintains catering brochure menu and pricing annually.

Required Qualifications
  • Strong knowledge of management principles, policies, concepts and best practices and skill to select, train, mentor, evaluate and, as required, take disciplinary action with subordinate staff.
  • Strong knowledge of all aspects of event management and production and public relations.
  • Strong knowledge of and/or ability to learn about the campus, its vision, mission, goals, programs, policies and infrastructure.
  • Strong knowledge of program management, including comprehensive staff and budget administration.
  • Strong interpersonal communications skills to build and foster a collaborative and cooperative work environment and build to maintain good working relationships with all organizational levels and outside constituencies.
  • Strong political acumen and skill in judgment, decision-making and problem recognition, avoidance and resolution.
  • Strong leadership / management skills, including skills to lead, direct, mentor, evaluate and motivate staff.
  • Strong culinary knowledge, including scale production and menu costing.

Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

Licenses/Certifications:
  • ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $91,400.00 - $144,210.00.
  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position, and eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This is an exempt, monthly paid position. The annual salary is commensurate with experience.
