With over 650 student-athletes participating in UW's 22 sports programs, the department of Intercollegiate Athletics is committed to providing student-athletes with the ability to compete for national and conference championships while working toward a degree from one of the world's leading public research universities.

This position reports to the Senior Associate Athletic Director of Student Development. Within Student-Athlete Academic Services (SAAS), the Assistant Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Development, in conjunction with the Senior Associate Athletic Director of Student Development, will be responsible for the leadership, management, strategic planning, oversight, and execution of a comprehensive student-athlete development program serving all student-athletes at the University of Washington. The mission of the program is to develop leadership, educate on necessary life skills, and prepare for an effective transition into careers, professional lives, and graduate programs through a comprehensive, holistic four-year plan.

The Assistant Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Development will serve as a member of the SAAS management team responsible for overseeing all staff, programming, and operations of the unit.

In addition, the Assistant Athletic Director will directly lead the Boundless Futures Student-Athlete Development program for student-athletes including vision creation, strategic planning, and delivery of career counseling, educational programming, internships, job opportunities, and NIL education activities for UW student-athletes.

The employee will work independently and prioritize and complete ongoing tasks following established departmental, University of Washington, Pac-12 Conference, and NCAA guidelines and university policies. The Director will be expected to perform and work without direct supervision. Periodic in-progress checks of work are made. Reporting line is to the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student Development.

The responsibilities of the Assistant Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Development include:

Leadership and Management -

Serve as a member of the SAAS management team, which oversees the day-to-day operations, policies and procedures of the SAAS unit.

Oversee, develop and manage the SAAS staff development and mentorship program.

The Assistant Athletic Director will directly supervise the Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Development and the Student­Athlete Development Coordinator and any assigned student workers or interns. Duties include: hiring, onboarding, training, development and supervision/evaluation.

Lead and oversee the operations, planning, and execution of comprehensive student-athlete development program for student-athletes including student-athlete orientation, General Studies courses, leadership programming, life skills, career development, and transition to life after sport.

Works with Deputy Athletic Director/Senior Women’s Administrator and ICA Title IX representative to develop processes around and provide direction of all mandated student-athlete programming including but not limited to; sexual assault and violence preventions, drug and alcohol education and diversity and inclusion programs.

Engage in donor meetings, engagement opportunities, and presentations as needed. Work collaboratively with ICA development staff to identify needs and provide support in funding opportunities.

Create and manage the student-athlete development budget and endowment/donor gifts annually.

Create and grow key campus and community partnerships in the areas of leadership, life skills training, and career services. Leverage existing campus resources and programs to progress student-athletes through the different stages of development.

Analyze methods of data collection and program success measurements. Create systems where needed.

Provide consistent and frequent communication, training, and resources, verbally and in writing, with administration, staff, and coaches regarding student-athlete development programs and services to create buy-in by constituents.

Remain updated on current trends and best practices in career services and leadership development, as well as the NCAA and Pac-12 Conference.

Participate in recruiting visits and presentations as requested.

Boundless Futures Student-Athlete Development Program -

Initiate, foster, and retain employer relationships in a variety of career fields to facilitate partnerships and internships, job shadowing, informational interview opportunities, and career placement for student-athletes. Direct outreach efforts to employers who understand the unique nature and commitments of student-athletes.

Assist Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student Development in the coordination of the Boundless Futures advisory board including preparation for quarterly meetings, agenda formation, and execution of recommendations.

Facilitate career counseling services to include resume/cover letter coaching, interview preparation, etiquette training, and transition resources and services. Conduct information sessions for new coaches and staff when appropriate.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student Development.

Compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA, the Pac-12 Conference, the State of Washington and any other governing body is of paramount importance to the University. The overall responsibility of this position is to ensure the successful operation of the program in full compliance with all such rules and regulations. As a condition of employment, the Employee shall be required to participate in rules education programs offered by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Required Qualifications:  

Master's degree required in education, counseling, sport management, human resources, student affairs, or related field. A minimum two years of experience working in collegiate athletics, education, student development/services or career services related field in public or private sectors.  

Proven ability to develop programs, create teams, manage staff, coordinate resources and create a positive culture at the collegiate level.  

Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and according to FERPA regulations. Skill in working independently and following through on duties with minimal direction. Ability to effectively counsel and advise students with professional, academic, and/or personal questions and concerns.  

Outstanding communication skills both oral and written, including skill in writing memos and reports. Strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to work under pressure. Ability to interact diplomatically with individuals of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds. Ability to establish working relationships and interact collaboratively and effectively with other staff, student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and the university community. Outstanding listening, analytical, and problem-solving skills in work with academic staff and student-athletes.  

Willingness to work night and weekend hours as needed, especially in peak demand times of the academic year.  

Preferred Qualifications:  

Strong preference will be given to those candidates who have worked with student-athletes at the Division I level. Working knowledge of NCAA policies, rules, and regulations.  

Experience in employer relations, recruiting, career coaching, and employment practices in a corporate or academic setting.
