Position Details:

The Washington State University Veterans Student Support Services (SSS) program is a project of the Office of Academic Engagement, funded by the US Department of Education. Veterans SSS supports the engagement, persistence, and graduation of eligible student Veterans and fosters an institutional climate supportive of the success of student Veterans from low-income, first-generation backgrounds and those with disabilities. The program provides academic support, emergency grant aid, financial education, and mentorship for program participants.

Summary of Duties:

This position is responsible for effective advising and implementation of a major program and student success initiative focused on supporting retention and success of the increasingly diverse population of Veterans pursuing a first undergraduate degree. Working alongside the Director to provide expertise and support, major responsibilities include: advising and counseling of students; developing and executing student programming; functioning as a liaison with University faculty, supervisors, and internal and external constituents; monitoring and evaluating student services and operational effectiveness, and; supervising a team of undergraduate and graduate student workers providing critical services. The Project Coordinator is charged with carrying out the mission and strategic plan of the organization through effective and efficient coordination of operations, the development of opportunities, stakeholder relations, and strategic initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of professional work experience in student services or related education/experience. Experience leading or directing the work of others. A Master's degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Demonstrated experience working successfully with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and/or the public.
  • Demonstrated experience with programming, student services, and assessment.
  • Broad knowledge of and work experience with student transition issues and retention related to the target population.
  • Demonstrated computer skills including working knowledge of Office 365.
  • Ability, and willingness, to work some weekends and evenings.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in education or related field.
  • Experience with programs serving student Veterans .
  • Conflict and crisis management experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and positively in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Well-developed written, verbal, organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated and extensive problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Due to the nature of funding, this is a temporary appointment with an appointment end date of August 31, 2023. Extension of the position is dependent on continuation of external funding. Student Support Services in OAE at WSU have been reliably and continuously funded at WSU since 2015.
