Missouri Western State University welcomes applicants for our Accessibility Resource Coordinator/Director. Located in St. Joseph, Missouri, we are just 45 minutes north of Kansas City.
The Coordinator/Director of the Accessibility Resource Center (ARC) advocates for the inclusion of students with disabilities and assists Missouri Western State University in maintaining compliance with federal disability statutes and university policies. The position requires a broad knowledge of different types of disabilities and psychological and medical conditions, accessibility standards and practices, academic accommodations and adjustments, and serves as a resource on disability inclusion and accessibility to the Missouri Western State University community.
The Coordinator/Director oversees the staff and directs the operations of the ARC to ensure the accessibility of programs and services across the Missouri Western State University. Applying independent judgment and expertise, the Coordinator/Director identifies reasonable academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, and other reasonable accommodations to minimize the disability-related barriers, addresses individual student issues with faculty and other campus personnel, and follows-up and reviews existing accommodations. This position will conduct student intake interviews, determine eligibility for accommodations, coordinate and implement approved accommodations, and serve as a resource for disability-related matters through attending or supporting orientation, open houses, departmental meetings, and certain student recruitment events. The Accessibility Resource Coordinator/Director supervises the disability services testing center and staff and collaborates with the Adaptive Technology Specialist to implement assistive technology or other accommodations and resolve issues for students with sensory, physical and temporary disabilities.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position supervises the ARC Testing Coordinator/Director, as well as the Adaptive Technology Specialist.
ESSENTIALDUTIES:
Ensures campus compliance of appropriate laws and regulations in service provision and equal access for students with disabilities.
Possesses extensive knowledge of federal laws pertaining to students with disabilities including section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Meets and collaborates with students with disabilities to identify barriers to full participation in the curricular, co-curricular, and housing environments and determine appropriate accommodations through the “interactive process.”
Provides supervision to disability services staff by coordinating, scheduling and prioritizing assignments.
Prepares and disseminates communications to faculty informing them of accommodations needed for students with disabilities who are enrolled in their classes. Consults with faculty to respond to questions and resolve in-class accommodation issues.
Resolve student complaints regarding compliance with requests for approved accommodations. Mediate conflicts between faculty and students.
Assist students in learning self-advocacy skills in communicating with their instructors.
Hires and schedules resources and staff, including student workers (note takers, sign language interpreters, readers/scribes).
Appropriately documents each interaction with students. Maintains files on students and their specific disability documentation (separate from academic files) and ensures confidentiality. Compiles specific data including number of students with disabilities enrolled, types of disabilities, services utilized and academic majors for both institutional and federal reporting purposes.
Coordinates services and conducts informational workshops for faculty and staff relating to disability-related topics.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated experience reviewing clinical documentation, conducting interactive/iterative processes for determining accommodations and providing such accommodations.
Ability to manage multiple, on-going and complex case-load of disability-related student matters.
Strong verbal and written interpersonal communication skills, attention to detail, problem-solving skills, organization, time management and electronic skills.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a range of constituencies including faculty and administrators.

Knowledge of models of disability and inclusive educational design and their application in higher education.
Skill at developing and delivering professional presentations and workshops.
Maintains awareness of best practices for students with disabilities in higher education.
Required:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education/special education, social work, higher education administration, counseling, psychology, vocational rehabilitation, or a related field.
A minimum of two (2) years of professional level experience working with individuals with disabilities.
A combination of education and experience may be taken into consideration based on the applicant’s credentials.
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred:
Master’s degree in education/special education, vocational rehabilitation, counseling, psychology, or a related field.
Minimum three years’ experience working in a higher education disability service position.
Experience leading or supervising disability services support staff or office.
