SOMeCA (SOAR/Student Media/Cultural Arts and Diversity) is a unit of Campus Life at UC Santa Cruz. SOMeCA is dedicated to the success of UCSC's campus-wide student organizations. SOMeCA supports the development of dynamic learning environments by offering mentorship, leadership training, organizational development advising, and event management services for student-initiated programs.

JOB SUMMARY

This Program Specialist oversees the development, implementation, and advising for student organizations' events and activities. The incumbent assists in the design and production of programs and events that promote the intellectual, cultural and social development of students. The incumbent will perform this role in a non-exempt capacity until sufficient training and experience allow for advancement to the P3 level.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $25.62 - $28.02 / Hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary above the posted range. The salary shown above is the budgeted range the University reasonably expects to pay.

JOB DUTIES

45% - Student Organization Advising & Oversight
  • Provides ongoing transformational student organization advising and development to student leaders participating in co-curricular programs and student organizations on a wide range of issues. Provides organizational advising with student leaders on complex and sensitive issues. Consults and educates students in organizational development theories, problem-solving, program planning and leadership skills. Advises student organizations in developing goals and objectives, governing documents and organizational structures; applies student development theory in designing orientation programs
  • Identifies organizational potentials and problems; analyzes and recommends future directions or solutions; earns the cooperation and trust of students of diverse backgrounds; exercises good judgment and discretion, particularly in sensitive or confidential matters; facilitates dialogues and mediates conflicts.
  • Assesses and authorizes student organization events within established policies; consults with students regarding budget strategies and use of multiple fund sources; assists in negotiations with performers and authorizes contracts; when required, oversees the use of campus facilities. Serves as a liaison between student organizations and campus units to problem-solve and facilitate major events.
  • Assimilates from oral and written sources a broad knowledge of relevant federal, state and local statutes, campus policies, procedures and resources; interprets and applies these with consistency to a wide variety of student-initiated programs; requests compliance and recommend sanctions when necessary.

15% - Student Development
  • Assists in the design and production of programs e.g. workshops & events that promote the intellectual, cultural and social development of students. May be responsible for teaching academic courses. Works in collaboration with student organization leaders to develop, produce, and evaluate SOAR programs.

15% - Financial Management
  • Oversees budgets for student organizations; authorizes all financial transactions and fundraising activities, according to University policies, fund source stipulations, insurance requirements, and federal, state, and local laws; provides advice to student organizations in the use of financial planning principles.

10% - Administration
  • Develops and maintains relationships with internal and external campus stakeholders critical to program success. Maintains ongoing cooperative and consultative relations with other units, including Resources Centers, Conduct & Community Standards, Academic Support Services, Colleges, Environmental Health and Safety, Police, Fire, and Risk Management. Serves as a campus resource in the planning and implementation of student development opportunities through committee participation.

10% - Student Organization Training
  • Models a participatory management style and involves students in establishing shared goals. Provides oversight for student organization leaders in compliance with University polices and procedures; when required recommends disciplinary sanctions for student organizations in agreement with Conduct.

5% - Other Duties as Assigned
  • Provides support to the SOMeCA office by completing special assignments as required. Serves on campus committees and task forces, attends ad hoc meetings; prepares reports; assists in the overall success of the unit.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Leadership experience with college students sufficient to oversee all aspects of program planning, implementation and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practice of student development, mentorship and organizational development.
  • Extensive experience planning and producing events and programs.
  • Experience designing, producing and presenting student development programs and trainings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the issues facing diverse students in a University setting and experience addressing these issues.
  • Proven effective conflict resolution and mediation skills.
  • Related experience mentoring student interns and supervising student employees.
  • Budgetary and financial experience sufficient to oversee and manage a $100,000 budget.
  • Demonstrated ability to assimilate a broad knowledge of complex laws, policies and procedures, and apply them with consistency to varied circumstances.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relations with students, faculty and staff.
  • Experience employing a participatory leadership and management style.
  • Proven ability to be flexible, cooperative, and collaborative within a complex and sensitive political and social environment.
  • Analytical skills to analyze and interpret reports and statistical data, conduct program assessments, and formulate recommendations.
  • Excellent oral presentation skills and written communication skills.
  • Ability to independently set priorities and complete multiple and competing job responsibilities.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience designing academic coursework related to organizational leadership.


SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
