Summary:

The Academic Dean of the Young School of Nursing at Regis College is responsible for the administration and oversight of all academic programs within the School of Nursing. Under the direction of the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost, the Dean is responsible for educational policy, academic programs and oversight of assessment in the School of Nursing and ensures the integrity, excellence and ongoing development of the nursing education programs.

 

The Dean is responsible for establishing academic standards, program curriculum development, execution and program planning; and ensuring appropriate infrastructure to verify and validate program outcomes. The Dean ensures the use of sound pedagogical methods and field-based engagement to ensure graduates possess current and future competencies.  The dean is responsible for all matters related to fiscal, physical, and educational resources.

 

Essential Responsibilities:

Academic Administration:

  • Serves as the chief academic officer for the School of Nursing (SON) overseeing admission standards, program development and administration; establishes academic standards and ensures that key academic processes are aligned.
  • Oversight of the assessment and development of faculty and administrator performance, including systematic contract management.
  • Represents the College and the School on matters tied to academic administration with agencies such as the ACEN, NECHE, Massachusetts State Board of Nursing, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Ensures that accreditation standards are in compliance, and implementation of systems and infrastructure to achieve faculty competency and development, quality student outcomes, and a comprehensive database.  
  • Accountable for achievement of goals and objectives within the scope of School of Nursing as set forth in the University’s Strategic Plan.

Faculty Engagement:

  • Collaborates with college administration to ensure faculty development and accreditation standards are met or exceeded through continuous improvement models.
  • Ensures that all faculty evaluations and assessment are collected and analyzed.
  • Identifies faculty skills and abilities required for successful program/curricular administration and recruits qualified faculty to ensure academic and regulatory standards are met or exceeded.
  • Works with faculty governance standing committees to ensure that hiring, rank and promotion, curriculum, and student affairs issues are addressed.
  • Oversees faculty scheduling, course planning, faculty orientation and mentoring to ensure ongoing professional development.
  • Works with associate deans to develop, mentor, and coach faculty in matters of pedagogy, professional development, and student management issues.
  • Builds a cohesive learning environment within and across programs.
  • Serves as ex-officio members on assigned faculty standing committees.

Curriculum Development and Evaluation:

  • Ensures that curricula are relevant and meet regulatory and academic standards.
  • Participates in the program evaluation plan to ensure that metrics for analysis are set, change/improvement opportunities are advanced, and that resource allocation for evaluation studies are supported.
  • Collaborates with the other School Academic Deans, the faculty curriculum committees within the SON, and academic assessment, and serves as an ex-officio member for curriculum development, modification, and enhancements for existing and new programs, consistent with Regis College’s mission.
  • Advocates and supports the use of technology in the classroom and simulation lab setting.
  • Applies for grants consistent with program development opportunities.

Budget Administration and Oversight:

  • Consults with faculty and nursing leadership to develop the SON budget. Oversees the administration of the program budgets.
  • Collaborates with the VPAA in determining faculty appointments and the SON budget (e.g., faculty salaries).
  • Establishes ways to enhance revenue for the school through new partnerships and funding opportunities.
  • Establishes class size with consideration to budget impact and quality learning.

Committees and External Representation

  • Serves on President’s Administrative Council, Board of Trustees Academic Affairs Committee and the Deans’ Council, and other assigned task forces and committees.
  • Represents the University on local and statewide committees.
  • Serves as a College and Program advocate for faculty, students and external professional organizations.
  • Promotes collaboration with hospitals and other healthcare institutions.

 

Supervisor Responsibility:

  • Supervises Associate Deans and oversees the supervision of Assistant Deans, Program Directors, Course Coordinators, faculty, and administrative support staff.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in collaboration with Associate Deans and in accordance with Regis College’s policies and applicable laws.  Is accountable for interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

 

Skills/Experience/Training Required:

  • Earned doctorate from an accredited U.S. college or university.
  • Minimum of five years of academic leadership experience (coordinator, director, assistant/associate dean) at an accredited U.S. college or university.
  • Registered nurse in Massachusetts, with a minimum of three years of teaching experience in nursing.
  • Ability to uphold the University’s commitment to inclusive excellence in a diverse educational community. 
  • Supervisory and management experience with demonstrated ability to effectively partner with diverse groups and work collaboratively with a team. 
  • Strong qualitative and quantitative analytical skills with ability to effectively analyze, evaluate, interpret, and present data to multi-level audiences.
  • Experience in large group facilitation with excellent organizational ability, interpersonal skills, and high aptitude in oral and written communications.
  • Proactive and creative approach to problem solving and experience providing crisis intervention and referrals to appropriate campus and community resources.
  • Ability to work within a fast-paced environment while managing multiple tasks and competing priorities.
  • Strong community-building skills and a proven record of collaborating with colleagues in developing comprehensive and integrated efforts to support students.
  • Thorough familiarity with accreditation standards, federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to nursing education.

 

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

  • Normal office environment, not subject to extremes in temperature, noise, odors, etc.
  • May spend extended periods at terminal, on telephone, or operating other office machines, requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity.
  • Frequent interruptions to assist staff and faculty.
