As a condition of employment, staff are required to live in the staff apartment provided in the area of responsibility. In addition to a furnished apartment, staff are provided with a declining debit meal plan and professional development funds.

The Resident Director is a live-in master's degree-level professional who is responsible for the operation of one or two residence halls, housing between 190 and 450 students. The Resident Director is charged with shaping the environment and experiences of residential students by providing services and programs focused on the Office of Residence Life’s Pillars of Success. This position reports to an Assistant Director of Residence Life. Depending on the size of the residence hall community, Resident Directors will supervise 7-14 resident assistants, and some Resident Directors will also supervise a graduate student. This position is considered essential personnel.
The Resident Director must be able to work independently, demonstrate initiative, display a strong commitment to student learning, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively with stakeholders inside and outside of the University. Individuals in this position must have the ability and willingness to assume shared responsibility for campus-wide on-call duty and respond to crisis and emergency situations.
Miami University has over 16,000 undergraduate students and the Office of Residence Life works to establish an educational living and learning environment for approximately 8,500 students residing in 40 residence halls and apartments each of which houses between 80 and 450 students. There is a two-year student live on requirement at Miami and residential students are served by 250+ Resident Assistants, 15 Graduate Assistants, and 20+ full-time live-in staff members.
