Job Summary:
The Assistant Director of Student Involvement (Fraternity & Sorority Life) is an integral part of the daily operation of the Office of Student Involvement ('OSI'), as well as the Division of Student Life. Under the supervision of the Director of Student Involvement, the Assistant Director develops educational initiatives, innovative programming, and meaningful relationships to cultivate impactful student organization experiences. The Assistant Director is responsible for assisting with oversight of Furman's fraternity and sorority community of over 750 students and 13 chapters. The Assistant Director will promote learning and development for student leaders through collaboration within the OSI, Center for Inclusive Communities, the Shucker Center for Leadership Development, the Malone Center for Career Engagement, and other campus partners. The Assistant Director will assist the Director in developing organizational competencies and assessment outcomes that connect student participation to the University's strategic vision, The Furman Advantage.

Additionally, the Assistant Director will collaborate with colleagues in the Office of Student Involvement to further its strategic initiatives related to diversity and inclusion, new student orientation, leadership development, and student center operations. In so doing, the Assistant Director will support the mission of the OSI to create a vibrant campus in which students enjoy a broad experience within a close-knit community. Finally, the Assistant Director will support the learning outcomes of the Division of Student Life.

Job Description:

Responsibilities:

Primary

Serves as advisor to both student-led governing councils: Furman Panhellenic Council (FPC) and Interfraternity Council (IFC); provides community support through one-on-one meetings with council officers and attendance at council meetings to promote student leadership and a values-centered fraternity and sorority experience.

Directs the coordination of formal and informal recruitment activities for FPC and IFC; serves as primary staff contact for membership intake processes for Furman's two National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) organizations.

Advises and mentors leaders of FPC, IFC, and NPHC chapters, including providing guidance and support through regular one-on-one meetings.

Coordinates and/or assists with community-wide educational programs, including officer transition workshops, leadership retreats, new member programming, and leadership awards.

Assists with the development and implementation of a new fraternity/sorority chapter excellence program to align fraternity/sorority organizations with The Furman Advantage.

Communicates, interprets, and enforces appropriate University policies; provides guidance and support to chapters particularly in the areas of risk management, membership recruitment and education, community building, academic excellence, social justice, civic engagement, and personal leadership.

Assists with management of syncDIN (student organization management software, powered by the Engage platform) to ensure accurate records of organization events, as well as updated rosters of members, officers, and advisors.

Assists with updating accurate records related to scholarship, community service, philanthropic efforts, event management, and other pertinent statistics for the OSI and Division of Student Life.

Serves as a point of contact for chapter inter/national organizations, alumni, and chapter advisors.

Oversees all Fraternity & Sorority Life marketing and communications efforts.

Manages Fraternity & Sorority Life operating budget.

Collaborates with other Student Involvement staff to support a comprehensive student organization program.

Assists with student organization leader and advisor training and support.

Assists with supervision of student employees.

Works closely with other Student Involvement staff to implement strategic initiatives and departmental programs and activities.

Division and University

Assists in the development of assessment plans, strategic thinking and planning, learning outcomes, and goals and objectives coordinated with the mission and vision statements of the University, the Division of Student Life and the Office of Student Involvement.

Serves on the Student Conduct Board.

Serves on campus committees as assigned.

Conducts professional development activities, with approval by the Director, and maintains volunteer activities with a chosen professional association as appropriate.

Completes performance review process with supervisor to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and University goals.

Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor in support of the goals and objectives of the Division of Student Life, and the University. Relationships:

Daily contact with members of own work unit, immediate supervisor, students, and student workers to plan, coordinate, problem solve, present information related to mutual goals.

Frequent contact with other departments to plan, coordinate, problem solve, present information related to mutual goals.

Routinely handles confidential information.

Routine contact with parents and the general public to exchange factual information and explanation of rules, regulations, practices or functions.

Responsibility for Final Decisions:

Reviews work to ensure compliance with procedures and deadlines.

Tasks involve multiple procedures with interrelated processes or steps; Work involves choosing the appropriate option or procedure to follow and applying established rules and procedures.

Errors may be detected within the department or section in which they occur, but may affect the work of others within the unit to trace errors and make corrections.

Reports To: Director of Student Involvement

Work is performed independently. Non-routine issues or questions are referred to the supervisor.

Education/Skill Requirements:

Master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Counseling or other related field required.

1-3 years of experience in Student Affairs or Higher Education (graduate experience may be considered); experience in fraternity and sorority advising is strongly preferred.

Knowledge of best practices and ability to infuse research with practical experience to create intentional leadership programs for fraternity and sorority life.

Understanding of student development and identity development theories and practical applications is essential.

Must have excellent organizational skills and strong communication skills.

Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.

Ability to interact with a diverse population and maintain a positive attitude in time of crisis.

Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Understanding of the importance of student learning outcomes and assessment preferred.

Work Conditions:

Work is performed under usual office conditions.

Some evening and weekend hours required.
