Job Summary

Manage the functions of the BUILD office, including administrative support for the BUILD program and Director of BUILD, and provide oversight of first-year internships and Independent Study courses to the BUILD program in conjunction with the director and fellow internship supervisor to ensure that students are able to successfully participate in and fulfill the requirements for a Certificate in Applied Studies.  

 

BUILD's mission is to provide students with intellectual disabilities a postsecondary, residential college experience, which is boldly influenced and motivated by the Christian faith, propelling students to confidently navigate their world with self-determination to live more independently, maintain meaningful employment, and value life in community with others. This integrated experience includes opportunities for academic, vocational, residential, social, and spiritual development.

Responsibilities

  • Primary contact responsible for managing build-program email and phone communication, directing to correct staff person as needed, including communication to prospective BUILD students and families such as responding to requests for information and representing BUILD at various college and transition fairs (typically evenings/weekends), in addition to providing a welcoming experience and support to students, families and mentors who come to the BUILD Office (front desk).
  • Manage daily operations related to BUILD program focus on developing employment skills through internship work experiences for first-year students including working with employers to arrange and provide ongoing support to maintain internships, preparing career exploration content for and teaching the BIN 026 Internship course (spring semester only), and Independent Study courses  including management of work skills curriculum for both first and second-year students (BIS 017 & BIS 037 fall semester, BIS 027 & BIS 047 spring semester) for a total of 6 credits per year.
  • Hire, train, and direct work of Job and Student Mentors and students working in the BUILD Office.
  • Invoice third-party vendors for students and maintain records in collaboration with the Business Office including managing of requests for payment, transfers, and submitting expense reports.
  • Support BUILD team by setting up student workers as employees through EPAF system, submitting background checks to the Office of People and Culture, approving timesheets for student worker supervisees, and obtaining/maintaining status as approved Notary Public to support program paperwork completion.
  • Design personalized learning plans (PLP) for students, monitor progress of students, and participate in PLP meetings . Communicate with parent(s)/guardian(s) as appropriate regarding internships and student progress.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Skills

  • Ability to support Bethel University’s statement of Christian faith and share that knowledge with students and clients
  • Knowledge of characteristics of students with intellectual disabilities including awareness of effective accommodations and supports for students with intellectual disabilities in a postsecondary program.
  • Ability to plan, develop, and implement curriculum and instruction using principles of Universal Design for Learning.
  • Knowledge of community agencies and service groups focused on supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in developing their employment skills.
  • Ability to provide a supportive and caring environment for students, parent(s)/guardian(s), and Bethel Community Members.
  • Ability to establish and maintain open and cooperative communication with BUILD staff, students, parent(s)/guardian(s), and Bethel Community Members.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to hire, train, and manage student workers.

 

Required Experience

Three years or more experience teaching or working with students with disabilities.

Experience teaching and/or working at transition or college level experience preferred.

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree, preferred, in Special Education or related field: Education, Leadership, Social Sciences, etc. Work-based Learning licensure preferred.

Additional Information

  • Position requires access to transportation to get to work sites as well as some night or weekend engagements in order to represent BUILD at various college and transition fairs.
  • 11 Month Position
