Assistant Dir of Student Counseling & Wellness

Position Summary

The College of Human Medicine invites applicants for the position of Assistant Director of Student Counseling and Wellness. The assistant director reports to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs within the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine Office of Student Affairs and Services.  The assistant director serves as an initial point of contact for students, assisting them in the navigation of college and community resources to address personal counseling, health, and academic concerns.

The Assistant Director of Student Counseling and Wellness will:

  • Screen and triage medical students experiencing emotional distress and for whom psychological factors may be adversely affecting their academic performance.
  • Assist students in navigating the college and community resources available to maximize personal, professional, and academic growth.
  • Actively engage a subgroup of MSU-CHM students to provide education regarding student support and services and will remain an ongoing resource for students.
  • Develop lists of resources available to students to assist with personal and health concerns and oversee the annual update of those resource lists.
  • Develop and implement presentations and workshops for students on issues related to student mental health and student well-being across all four years of the curriculum.
  • Collaborate on presentations to administrators, faculty, and staff on topics related to medical student well-being.
  • Serve as a member of the Student Wellness Team led by the Assistant Dean for Student Wellness and Engagement.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Dean for Student Wellness and Engagement on the development and oversight of a Medical Student Peer Support Network.
  • Provide cross-coverage with the Assistant Dean for Student Wellness and Engagement to serve students across the college’s eight community campuses.
  • Serve as a resource for administrators, faculty, and staff in responding to the personal, health, and academic needs of students.
  • Consult with and/or act as a liaison to Michigan State University resources addressing the overall health and well-being of students.
  • Consult with and/or act as a liaison to community resources that have the potential to meet the personal health needs of students and to support student well-being.
  • Participate in research to assess the well-being of medical students and evaluate the impact of health and wellness programming on the adjustment and well-being of medical students.

The position is a 1.0 FTE (full-time equivalent) located in East Lansing with periodic travel to the other community campuses as needed. The position is a fixed-term, annually renewable position. The position will entail 70% direct work with students through advising and guidance and 30% teaching as reflected in the development and implementation of wellness curricula.

Masters -Psychology or Social Work

Minimum Requirements

  • The successful candidate must be a mental health professional licensed to practice independently in the State of Michigan. 
  • Successful candidates may be licensed as a Ph.D., MSW, or LPC. and will have had three to five years of experience as a licensed mental health professional.

Desired Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders within a complex and dynamic organization.
  • The successful candidate will have experience working with professional students, administrators, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • The successful candidate should bring initiative, creativity, and the capacity to develop rapport with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • The preferred candidate will have experience addressing issues of overall health and well-being.
  • The preferred candidate will have experience with students or trainees in medical education and/or health care delivery settings.
  • The preferred candidate will have experience collaborating with individuals in other disciplines and/or across agencies.
  • The candidate should be able to attend in-person and virtual professional conferences, workshops, and continuing education programs in the areas of mental health and medical student well-being
