Departmental Overview

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions (OUA) must provide a fair opportunity for every applicant to obtain admission to the University, operates in a professional manner that ensures positive staff morale, and values hard work and dedication. The team communicates and collaborates effectively, presents a coordinated effort to standardize procedures and document best practices, offer a variety of methods for professional development, and provides first class customer service in a cost-effective and transparent manner

Responsibilities
  • Develop, interprets, and administer an admission and/or outreach program.
  • Manage initiatives related to diversity recruitment, partnership development, and Southern California regional strategy.
  • Develop programs for the department to strengthen diversity competencies.
  • Develop strong, sustainable relationships with Berkeley Alumni affinity groups as well as regional community-based organizations in order to develop ongoing regional recruitment programs throughout the state and country.
  • Develop and maintains high-level relationships with Berkeley students, staff, and faculty to encourage support and participation in all outreach programs.
  • Helps to formulate campus undergraduate admission policy by providing analysis, advice, and expertise regarding diverse populations to the Assistant Vice Chancellor/Director of Undergraduate Admission.
  • Responsible for a recruitment territory.
  • Serves as an experienced reader for freshmen and transfer applications. As such, serves as a mentor and resource for other readers in both processes, demonstrating the ability to meet the reading goals while balancing other office tasks as needed.
  • Responsible for the independent review of both freshmen and transfer applications, meeting reading expectations, measured by both quantity and quality of the reads.
  • Provide expertise in the reading process by participating in quality assurance reviews and identifying trends in the overall reading process.
  • Provide direction to subordinate professional and support staff.
  • Direct the work of multiple assistant directors and two senior assistant directors.
  • Establish expectations and goals.
  • Provide guidance to assistant directors and senior assistant directors in establishing workload priorities; human resources issues and motivational and/or performance management.
  • Serve as a member of the Office of Undergraduate Admission leadership team which directs all functions and manages the workings of the office on a daily basis.
  • At the direction of the Assistant Vice Chancellor/Director represents the office in meetings or speaking engagements at schools, conferences, or in interviews with the media, particularly when the topics or issues in question fall within the position's areas of responsibility, such as multicultural recruitment, and represents the institution in such a manner as to promote goodwill and public support.
  • Responsible for ensuring that applicant inquiries receive the appropriate written/verbal response from the University, from the point of being a prospect to the point of enrollment.
  • Respond on behalf of the Director as needed.
  • Work primarily on externally focused efforts, including collaborating with the other Associate Directors on the establishment and management of an annual outreach calendar, and coordination with the Center for Educational Partnership programs on and off campus to leverage advising staff embedded in priority high schools and CA community colleges.
  • Work closely with campus partners to ensure all recruitment and outreach events are organized to best meet Office of Undergraduate Admission goals.
  • Responsible for monitoring the budget impact for managed functions.
  • Make decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions, and other human resources-related issues of managed staff. Complies with University, campus, and departmental policies governing performance appraisal and professional development.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to subordinates on most complex issues, elevating to the Assistant Vice Chancellor/Director as needed.
  • Professional Development: Responsible for maintaining knowledge of best practices, policies, and procedures in the admission field. Participate in professional organizations in the UC system and on a regional and national level, where appropriate.

Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience and cultural sensitivity in working with multicultural student populations.
  • Excellent project and program management skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and transform ideas into practical solutions.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to work over sustained periods of time (The position involves occasional evening and weekend work and several weeks of travel annually by air.)
  • Superior judgment and discretion with sensitive and/or confidential issues/information.
  • Advanced knowledge of education theory, policy, practice, and evaluation.
  • Significant knowledge of the goals and mission of the University as they relate to academic preparation, recruitment, and advanced-standing admission.
  • Significant knowledge regarding UC Berkeley's Colleges/schools' general education policies and requisite transfer preparation.
  • Advanced knowledge of fiscal management policies and practices and University personnel management policies and practices.
  • Knowledge of organizational development strategies and practice.
  • Must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the associations and agencies to which the Berkeley campus of the University of California adheres, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.

Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Minimum 3 years experience working in college admissions, multicultural student affairs, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Significant knowledge of and/or ability to learn the goals and mission of the University as they relate to academic preparation, recruitment, and advanced-standing admission.
  • Significant knowledge regarding and/or ability to learn UC Berkeley's Colleges/schools' general education policies and requisite transfer preparation.
  • Advanced knowledge of and/or ability to learn fiscal management policies and practices and University personnel management policies and practices.

Education/Training:
  • Master's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $91,400.00 - $131,100.00.
  • This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
  • This is a hybrid position, eligible for 40% remote capability.
