POSITION PURPOSE
The Department of Global Health has an outstanding opportunity for an Academic Advisor who will advise students in the Masters of Global Health (MPH) program and the Global Health Undergraduate Minor. This is a 1.0 FTE position within the Department of Global Health's Academic Programs and Student Services team. Individuals within the team have the flexibility to split their time working offsite and on campus in the Hans Rosling Center for Population Health. The position reports to the Assistant Director for Student Services and works closely with the MPH Program Manager, MPH and Minor faculty directors, and other student services staff within the Department of Global Health, Schools of Public Health and Medicine, and other student service-related units on campus.

The Academic Advisor is responsible for recruitment of prospective students and advising current students from admission through graduation. Advising includes, but is not limited to, proactive communication and tracking regarding degree requirements; academic, health and wellbeing resources; one-on-one and group advising sessions; and event management and assistance for prospective and current student activities. A review and assessment of duties will be done annually.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

MPH Program (65%)
  • Advise, support, and track students from admittance through graduation.
  • Actively track student grades and degree requirements; send satisfactory progress letters as needed.
  • Ensure students are immunization compliant with HSIP.
  • Ensure students are tracking competencies as required by accreditation body.
  • Liaise and maintain effective working relationships with partner offices across campus.
  • Attend departmental, school, and university meetings relating to student advising and support.
  • Counsel students on course selection, practicum, thesis, and capstone.
  • Provide guidance and resources regarding working with faculty, tutoring, disability accommodation, counseling services, Title IX support, travel, study abroad, and beyond.
  • Support diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives to improve the student experience.
  • Offer group and individual advising sessions.
  • Host online information sessions via Zoom.
  • Respond to prospective student inquiries.
  • Organize current students serving as Recruitment Representatives.
  • Ensure recruitment materials and recruitment webpages are effective and up to date.
  • Organize admitted student activities during Visit Days.
  • Represent program on departmental, school, and university committees, task forces, etc.
  • Attend cohort building/topical course for first year students and support instructors as needed.
  • Assist with events such as orientation and graduation, etc.
  • Organize quarterly thesis and capstone presentations.
  • Other related duties, as assigned.

    Undergraduate Minor (35%)
  • Advise students, both prospective and declared major or minor, individually and in groups.
  • Create and update student academic plans and provide information about related majors.
  • Liaise with UW, SPH, and DGH partners regarding advising resources.
  • Participate in School of Public Health undergraduate advising meetings.
  • Manage policies and procedures to support completion of minor, including petitions and review of graduation applications.
  • Work with campus faculty and staff to connect students with global health-related research and other opportunities.
  • Track enrollment and graduation status.
  • Track spending and manage budget.
  • Coordinate and facilitate recruitment events for undergraduates interested in global health.
  • Attend and support School of Public Health events to promote undergraduate offerings.
  • Communicate opportunities, resources, and events relevant to students interested in global health.
  • Maintain Global Health Minor website presence.
  • Track and report statistics on students, course enrollments, and bottlenecks in the program.
  • Maintain list of approved electives.
  • Other related duties, as assigned.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in social, natural or health sciences, international studies, or related field.
  • At least three years of experience in coordinating or managing student or academic programs.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Strong verbal and writing skills; ability to communicate in diverse written formats and mediums, as well as to tune messages for a wide variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude and ability to react to changing needs in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Able to work both independently and within teams to effectively and creatively solve problems with administrators, faculty, staff and students, while maintaining a high level of confidentiality.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and effectively prioritizes and re-prioritizes work, while dealing with frequent interruptions.
  • Demonstrated strong initiative and follow-through with multiple responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, develop, streamline, and evaluate processes and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a proven ability to and enthusiasm for working with multiple constituencies and people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated computer skills including Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and willingness to learn new technologies.
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Professional experience working with academic programs and student and/or administrative systems at the University of Washington.
  • Background in process improvement and working effectively with change.
  • Knowledge of University academic policies and experience working with domestic and international students in an academic environment and experience coordinating with several offices on campus to ensure students are satisfying university, school, and department requirements.
  • Ability and interest to develop an understanding of the complexities of international student's home countries, including politics, geography, and cultural norms.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
    Schedule is typically business hours, 8:30 am-5:00 pm, M-F. Position occasionally requires extended hours for student-associated activities and program special events.

    A satisfactory outcome from criminal background verification will be required prior to hire.
