College Overview:
The College of Letters & Science is the largest of the university's 14 colleges and schools and the most prestigious teaching and research unit in the UC system. L&S encompasses more than half of the campus' faculty, three-quarters of its undergraduate students, and half of its Ph.D. candidates. Organized into six divisions: Arts and Humanities, Biological Sciences, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, L&S Core, and the Undergraduate Division, L&S offers students a choice of more than 70 departmental majors, joint majors and simultaneous degree programs as well as vast opportunities to study and conduct research both within and outside of the traditional disciplines.
Departmental Overview:
The L&S Office of Undergraduate Advising (OUA) provides academic advising to newly admitted, currently enrolled and readmitted undergraduate students (approximately 23,000). Additionally, OUA provides guidance on academic programs, policies, procedures in the College of Letters & Science. OUA enforces and adjudicates the academic regulations of the College in order to ensure the integrity of the degree and the continuing quality of the institution. Decisions made by OUA impact all academic units within the College of Letters & Science and set precedent for other Colleges on campus.
OUA works collaboratively with academic and administrative departments across campus. To enhance the student experience, OUA utilizes an Advising Neighborhood model by division and academic discipline, resulting in College Advisers and Undergraduate Major Advisers working more closely and collaboratively with each other.
This position supervisesL&S Advising frontline staff, oversees petition processing, and manages the day-to-day operations of the front desk. They serve as the primary point of contact to frontline staff and provide guidance on issues related to academic progress, degree requirements, College policies, and petition processing. Additionally, they lead frontline initiatives and coordinate frontline advising services (i.e. intake advising, AskLnS email advising, virtual front desk/drop-in advising, and petition processing).

Responsibilities
SUPERVISION
Directs 5-8 FTEs who provide or support intake advising, petition processing, and other forms of transactional advising.
Develops job descriptions, selects subordinates, and assigns work.
Formulates performance standards in alignment with the University's coaching culture, conducts individual performance evaluations, and recommends corrective action, when necessary.
Provides team members guidance and direction on interpreting complex academic policies.
LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT
Manages frontline operations-improves processes and practices and establishes workflow when one does not exist or requires modification.
Conducts needs analysis and designs reports to track usage and performance of frontline advising services.
Plans staff training and inspires positive teamwork.
Participates in the development and monitoring of policies and procedures for Student Services operations, and recommends to senior leadership changes in policies and procedures.
Represents the interest of L&S Advising's frontline services on various committees; participates in short-term and long-term strategic planning with Senior leadership.
PROJECTS
Develops advising tools that streamline the processing of student petitions.
Leads process analysis and supports improvement efforts.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT & GROWTH
Expands upon people management skills and stays abreast to best practices and innovations in academic advising.
Required Qualifications
Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Experience advising undergraduates and advance knowledge of higher education policies and degree requirements.
Prior experience monitoring and assessing projects, processes, or services.
Ability to lead change and innovation.
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous supervision experience of career staff, preferably at UC Berkeley or within the UC system.
Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.

Salary & Benefits
This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for full UC Benefits.
Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $93,100.00 - $102,000.00, commensurate with experience.
