Associate Director of Student Success & Retention

Position Summary

The Michigan State University (MSU) College of Nursing (CON) is seeking applications for an Associate Director of Student Success and Retention. The CON offers programs that allow Nursing and Pre-Nursing students to experience unique educational opportunities to help them become BSN-prepared nurses. The Associate Director of Student Success and Retention will have oversight, responsibility, and leadership for educational programming outside of the classroom in the CON that provides services to support undergraduate student success. This position will be responsible for student recruitment (including on- and off-campus events), admissions, orientation, academic advising, academic progression, and degree certification for ACCESS and Nursing Scholar students. Additionally, the position will develop program metrics (both leading and lagging indicators), identify benchmarks, monitor outcomes, and develop related strategies and initiatives for each program. The Associate Director will be responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating all graduate assistants and undergraduate peer mentors who will assist with supporting the programs offered. This is a fixed term position that will require a full-time on-campus presence.  Occasional nights and weekends along with some local travel will be required of this position.  

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Teach the UGS 110 seminar for Pre-Nursing students annually
  • Monitor and track the academic progress of ACCESS and Nursing Scholar students
  • Facilitate presentations and outreach activities with pre-college groups; collaborate with other units on campus to plan joint recruitment activities
  • Report and disseminate program outcomes internally to the college and the university community and externally to outside community partners
  • Demonstrate a commitment to long term, sustained action that increases diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts across the CON
  • Intentionally creates an environment that encourages inclusive learning, work, and clinical service environments that enable everyone to reach their full potential

Required Degree

Masters -Student Affairs, Higher Education, Nursing

Minimum Requirements

  • A minimum of five years of experience in program and/or curriculum development or project management
  • Culturally competent with experience working with culturally diverse individuals and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) with experience in public speaking
  • Ability to provide high-quality customer service and handle multiple priorities simultaneously with confidence and poise in a fast-paced environment and to prioritize activities so that deadlines are met with limited supervision
  • Ability to work with detailed information with attention to accuracy; strong skills in documentation, tracking, and data collection
  • Ability to access, understand, and interpret data from various sources to promote student success through data-informed and innovative practices
  • Proven success in innovative thinking to develop and implement creative solutions to complex challenges
  • Evidence of the ability to work collaboratively and constructively with people at multiple levels and with diverse perspectives and to build consensus across multiple divisions of a complex organization
  • Experience working in an academic setting
  • Ability to lift 30+ lbs
  • Valid driver’s license
