Position Summary:

The director provides administrative and professional leadership for the Louise M. Conley Counseling and Wellness Services including the Counseling Center, Health Promotion, and Prevention Education. The director serves in a senior leadership role leading and managing the counseling and wellness programs in order to advance the University's efforts to support student success and development. The director is responsible for a comprehensive program of counseling and psychological services for a largely undergraduate population on a residential campus.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the recruitment, selection, supervision, evaluation and professional development of all departmental staff and trainees.
  • Provide oversight for the operation of a comprehensive counseling center with services including but not limited to: individual and group therapy; crisis intervention; consultation; training; educational programming and outreach; and research.
  • Responsible for risk management policies and procedures.
  • Develops and implements Counseling Center policies and procedures, and updates policies regularly.
  • Provide individual and group counseling, crisis assessment and intervention, consultation, follow-up and referral.
  • Oversee and participate in outreach programming including programs offered through Health Promotion and Prevention Services.
  • Work closely with other departments and offices in responding to student crises and in supporting students who are experiencing significant difficulties navigating college life.
  • Coordinate and provide mandated student assessments to address student preparedness to function in a college setting.
  • Coordinate the center's emergency and crisis response procedures and participates in crisis intervention.
  • Serve as a liaison with other departments on campus.
  • Participate in divisional and campus-wide committees such as the Care Team, VP Student Affairs Directors' Cabinet meetings, Student Well-being Committee, President's Council on Inclusive Excellence, the Student Health Advisory Council, Academic Standing Committee, Middle States review, and the Strategic Planning Committee.
  • Coordinate and provide oversight for the provision of Psychiatric services in the Counseling Center. Includes supervising Counseling Center any psychiatric provider, as well as serving as liaison to Upstate Medical Center Department of Psychiatry as necessary.
  • Serve as a consultant to College administration, faculty and staff for student problems.
  • Serve as a liaison with community agencies and the Guthrie Cortland Regional Medical Center regarding mental health issues.
  • Oversee the continuing accreditation of the counseling center through IACS (International Accreditation for Counseling Services).
  • Responsible for overseeing regular updates to in-house scheduling/database program while assuring accurate data entry and documentation of services by staff.
  • Develop and oversee administrative processes within office including Medical Leave of Absence (MLOA), record requests and attendance documentation.
  • Responsible for writing CWS annual report, including providing up-to-date and accurate data related to service provision, students seen, and programs offered.
  • Review and update CWS website regularly to assure accuracy of content as well as relevance to student concerns.

Required Qualifications:


  • Licensure as a psychologist in New York State, or eligible to obtain licensure as a psychologist in New York State within one year of appointment to the position. (https://www.op.nysed.gov/professions/psychology/license-requirements );
  • Clinical and supervisory experience;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to make effective oral presentations, facilitate an open exchange of ideas, and write clear and concise notes, documents, and reports;
  • Knowledge of the clinical, legal and ethical aspects of treating mental health clients;
  • Knowledge of the laws and regulations pertaining to the field of mental health;

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Clinical and supervisory experience in a university counseling center setting;
  • Understanding of developmental issues facing college students;
  • Experience meeting the needs of clients from diverse populations;
