DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
Learning Support Services offers small group course specific tutoring, large group course specific tutoring (like MSI and SI), writing tutoring, and drop-in services for all undergraduate students at UCSC. Programs are grounded in educational theory that supports the academic development of students through these peer-led services that address and minimize educational equity issues. LSS provides academic support across all five divisions: Arts, School of Engineering, Humanities, Physical and Biological Sciences, and Social Sciences employing over 400 Peer Tutors each year and serving over 6,000 undergraduate students. LSS works closely with the Education Opportunity Program (EOP), Services to Transfer and Re-Entry Program (STARS), Disability Resource Center (DRC), Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives, and the colleges to increase the success rate of non-traditional students. LSS has a permanent operating budget of approximately $900,000, HSI funded grants currently have a budget of $1,900,000 annually.
Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Learning Support Services (LSS), the Supplemental Instruction (SI) Project Coordinator provides support for the daily implementation of the SI program, large group tutoring programs, and office support. The SI Project Coordinator supports the SI program by overseeing and implementing special tutoring projects as well as supervising student tutor staff and assisting in the LSS Mentor Program and other special projects as assigned. The SI project coordinator provides logistical support for the SI program and works with the Assistant Director and other large group team members to develop pedagogical training workshops for undergraduate tutors in large group tutoring. The Project Coordinator supports the Assistant Director in collecting data or representing SI and LSS at different events as needed.

Budgeted Salary: $29.46 / Hourly. Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation rate for this role and should not offer a salary above the posted rate. Deliver academic programs to students via the SI program which enhances academic success through a course-based format of service in all academic disciplines.
Assist in the implementation of programs for students in critical transition stages, including high school or community college to first-year research university undergraduate course work; lower division to upper division; first semester issues; upper-division course work to advanced research / capstone-level project; undergraduate to graduate-level academic preparation.
Supervise student tutors and student office assistants.
Assist in the coordination of the SI program and student tutor staff, including their hiring, supervision, and evaluation process.
Co-supervise approximately 40-80 student employees each quarter.
Support the quarterly implementation of SI as well as the mentor program.
Develop and maintains schedules for the SI program and mentor program. This may include the assignment of tutors, the establishment of sign-up procedures, and the allocation of tutoring space.
Assist in the assessment of immediate and long-term demand for SI and offers feedback to the Assistant Director.
Effectively master and utilize technology in order to help streamline all SI program components. Suggest improvements to the current database system that tracks students hiring and utilization and effectively manage the oversight of this system.
Assist in the coordination of SI Leaders and tutor caseloads and settle tutor / tutee conflicts as needed.
Provide support in the management of daily operations of the Academic Resource Center (ARC) Learning Center, the Learning Center space at Oakes College, and other LSS spaces which we will acquire in the future. This will include maintaining an appropriate workflow and monitoring the activities in all locations.
Recommend budget plans and projections for SI and monitor and provide reports of program expenses as requested.
Assist in the responsibility of data collection, review, and reporting of SI timesheets.
Create and maintain Employee and Hiring records/files for student employees that follow university and UAW Union procedures as requested.
10% - Assessment
Assess appropriate needs of students, and refer students to specific student programs such as the Disability Resource Center, financial aid, and college / departmental advisors.
Assist in the development of appropriate outreach methodologies including contacting appropriate units and personnel to identify students in need of tutorial services, and develop student outreach strategies and publicity to publicize tutoring and SI services.
Develop and maintain systems for referral of students to appropriate student service units as required.
10% - Partnerships
Represent the SI program and LSS as a whole at meetings as required, and work closely with EOP Academic Support Services, the DRC, STARS staff, and other student support service programs at UCSC.
Implement established policies for the SI Learning Assistants that follow University and UAW guidelines.
Assist in the development of new policies in conjunction with the Academic Personal Office, Labor Relations, and Assistant Director of Learning Support Services.
10% - Mentorship and Training
Assist in the implementation of training workshops for SI Leaders. Perform session observations and provide feedback on student performance and overall program effectiveness to the Assistant Director.
Assist in the development of training sessions for SI Leaders in areas such as developing student rapport, group, and individualized tutoring methodologies, academic discipline-specific learning strategies, adapting to students' learning styles, making appropriate referrals, developing cultural competency, and promoting UCSC's Principles of Community.
5% - Workshops
Assist in the development and implementation of Academic Skills development workshops and seminars for students and for professional staff within Student Achievement, Equity, Innovation, peer advisers, and mentors across campus. Assist in the development of general academic skills of tutors.
Assist in formal evaluations of workshops / seminars, compile data, and write up results as requested.
5% - Program Evaluation
Using a variety of software, assist in the maintenance of LSS' comprehensive FileMaker Pro student database to provide LSS use data, including analysis of cost, educational effectiveness, and use by various student groups: EOP, DRC, academic college, or other units LSS may partner with.
Assist in compiling and analyzing SI program evaluation data.
Provide data each quarter and participate in the writing of reports documenting the utilization and effectiveness of Learning Support Services at UCSC.
In ongoing consultation with the Assistant Director of LSS, participate in the design, implementation, and evaluation of data collection, analysis, and reporting practices so as to ensure complete and accurate data on an ongoing basis.
Access campus data systems such as Academic Information System and Infoview as needed to best assist students.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Multicultural competencies; knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations.
Experience with tutorial programs, supplemental instruction, and / or other academic support programs in a college setting.
Skills in judgment, decision-making and problem-solving skills. Ability to review, understand and effectively apply policies and regulations to insure a smooth-running tutorial operation.
Outstanding oral and written communication skills; interpersonal, presentation, and conflict resolution skills. Ability to communicate information in small and large group settings.
Develops knowledge of current and theoretical models that influence the application and delivery of academic services (e.g., discipline-specific; student population-specific).
Ability to be highly reliable, follow through on all assignments and prepare reports in a timely manner and be punctual for meetings and appointments.
Ability to work harmoniously, cooperatively, and develop relationships with colleagues, university faculty and staff.
Knowledge of strategies in critical thinking, reading, writing, note taking, test taking, time management, and goal setting.
Ability to gather and analyze large amounts of qualitative and quantitative detailed information and synthesize it for effective communication with others and to make programmatic recommendations based on the analysis.
