About the Opportunity
Reporting to the Director of Academic Advising and Operations, The Assistant Director of Academic Advising and Operations will join a strong team of colleagues to provide ongoing academic and student affairs support to all School of Law students. This new position in the School of Law (SOL) presents an exciting opportunity to merge academic advising and support with student affairs related mentoring, programming, and policy development and implementation.

The Assistant Director:
Advise J.D. students one-one in-person and virtually on academic and non-academic matters throughout their time in law school, with the partnership of the Director of Academic Advising and Operations
Advises students on topics relating to but not limited to program sequencing, academic policies, graduation requirements, degree requirements, and students struggling academically
Reviews student records for completion of degree requirements
Fields questions from students and, if necessary, re-direct those questions to appropriate Northeastern University (NU) persons/offices
Works closely with SOL and NU departments/offices including, but not limited to, Admissions, Financial Aid, Academic Student Affairs (ASA), Co-op, Bar Prep, Academic Success Program (ASP), Law Review/moot court, Student Bar Association (SBA), Clinics, Communications, Law Library, Office of Computer Services, Disability Resource Center (DRC) to ensure coordinated services for all J.D. students
Assists the Assistant Director of Students Affairs in planning programs for all School of Law students including providing support for orientation and activities & programs, as needed
Collaborate with the Academic & Student Affairs staff with answering central inbox emails and may serve as first point of contact for in person walk in student questions
Oversee and assist supervising, hiring, training, and evaluating graduate student employees
Assists Director of Academic Advising and Operations in the review of character & fitness documents and drafting letters for the state bar associations
Serves on call in evenings for law school exams, as needed
Works closely with the degree program directors to refer students for appropriate academic and student support services
Support FlexJD Program, this includes:
Plans, manage, and attends 4-day weekend On-Campus Intensives (August/January/May) for the FlexJD (part-time) program. This position will work with various University and SOL offices to reserve space, order food, and connect students with university resources and SOL faculty & staff.
Planning all related in-person events, including:
August Flex JD Orientation
January FlexJD LSSC Intensive Period
Attend FlexJD events on Saturdays, Sundays, early mornings, and evenings, as needed
Serves as a dotted-line report to the Associate Dean for Digital Strategy for all academic advising and student affairs issues relating to FlexJD students
Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Students
Responsibilities:
Academic Advising, developing reports regarding academic issues, responding to email from the central inbox, bar certification and character and fitness reports
Planning FlexJD orientation and intensives
Supervising graduate assistants and perform other job-related duties as assigned
Assisting with programming, JD orientation, and other ASA organized events
Qualifications:
Required qualifications:
Bachelor's degree
2-4 years academic advising experience within higher education (or related experience)
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and a proven ability to work with a diverse group of students, staff, and faculty
Experience in student services and event planning
Availability to work nights and weekends, including attending events several weekends per semester and working evening hours throughout the semester, when required
Must be self-directed, able to make independent decisions
Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a strong customer service focus.
Demonstrated adaptability and ability to navigate and deescalate challenging situations
Preferred qualifications:
Master's Degree in higher education or related field
3-5 years academic advising experience within higher education
Experience with part-time and/or online programs/students
Experience with adult learners
