Job Summary:

 

The Staff Psychologist/Coordinator of Clinical Services to Student Athletes: (1) performs the duties of a mental health clinician, providing multi-culturally informed clinical services to Miami University students; training and supervisory services to mental health trainees; and consultation services to faculty, staff, students and parents; (2) provides expert clinical services specifically to meet the needs of student athletes, from a position largely embedded within the Department of Inter-Collegiate Athletics (ICA); and (3) coordinates the development and delivery of psycho-educational programming to ICA students, staff, and coaches on topics central to the mental health needs of student athletes following best practice guidelines outlined by the NCAA.

 

Duties/Physical Demands:

Staff Psychologist responsibilities:
• Provides multi-culturally informed psychological services (i.e. individual and group counseling) to Miami University students presenting with a wide range of mental health concerns; and makes referrals to other specialists as appropriate.
• Intervenes in crisis and emergency situations of a mental health nature with students, including after hours on-call responsibilities.
• Consults with faculty, staff, students, families, and other professionals regarding the mental health needs of students.
• Initiates and responds to requests to provide psycho-educational programming to various groups within the university community.
• Provides clinical supervision and training for staff, psychology interns within the SCS APA-accredited psychology internship-training program, and other trainees commensurate with the clinician’s licensure status.
• Maintains clinical records and provides clinical documentation and communication with external practitioners as necessary for ethical clinical treatment.
• Attends and participates in clinical staff meetings, consultations, and professional development.
• Assumes responsibility for other assignments including serving on divisional and university committees.

“Coordinator” and Administrative Responsibilities:
In collaboration with, and from a position predominantly embedded within, the Department of Inter-Collegiate Athletics, the Coordinator takes a leadership role in envisioning, developing and coordinating the implementation of the clinical, consultative, and programming services of Student Counseling Service to student athletes, staff, and coaches within ICA. Following the NCAA guidelines for Mental Health Best Practices, the Coordinator also works to maintain currency in the latest trends in the field of sport psychology and keeps the staff of the SCS educated and informed as to best practices in serving the mental health needs of student athletes and the consultative/psycho-educational needs of the staff and coaches of ICA. This clinician also participates on related Student Life, ICA, and University committees.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Experience working in mental health counseling/therapy
• Experience in crisis assessment/management/intervention, short-term treatment, and confidentiality requirements
• Demonstrated skills in working well under pressure to prioritize and manage multiple clinical situations and to coordinate these efforts as a part of a multidisciplinary team
• Energy to flexibly manage the professional demands of a challenging workload while maintaining positive and healthy perspectives and relationships
• Collaborative spirit of warmth, acceptance, respect, and trust towards colleagues
• Demonstrated sensitivity and commitment to multicultural issues/social justice and proven ability to interact with diverse individuals and groups
• Self-motivated, self-directed commitment to high professional ideals, standards and ethics
• Excellent oral and written communication skills

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology from an APA accredited program and licensure as a psychologist within the first year of employment

 

Desired Qualifications:

• Certification by the Association for Applied Sport Psychology
• Independent clinical licensure in Ohio
• Experience working in a college counseling center
• Experience working with high performance athletes within a college or university setting
• Ability to provide clinical supervision to psychology postdocs and psychology interns
