Position Overview: The Director of UMD Housing and Residence Life provides visionary leadership and direction for UMD Housing and Residence Life; administers and manages the student housing program for the University; directs departmental operations; oversees the department budget; sets department goals; and establishes outcomes and implementation strategies focused on student learning, development, and wellbeing. The Director develops collaborative relationships with stakeholders within and external to the University of Minnesota Duluth community, and develops and directs program planning for the department consistent with the University's strategic plan along with the goals and objectives of the Division of Student Life.
Primary Responsibilities:
Departmental Leadership (50%) • Provide direct and indirect supervision for a staff team of 14 professional & support staff positions and approximately 100 student staff members. • Manage Housing & Residence Life budget ($12M+ in annual revenue), including establishing priorities, proposing rates, and monitoring expenses. • Develop and implement departmental strategic plan and complete annual reports • Develop and implement strategies that promote and enhance University, Student Life, and departmental goals around social justice, equity, inclusion and diversity. • Facilitate regular meeting with various departmental staff groupings. • Provide leadership to departmental committees. • In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Housing Maintenance, ensure that residential facilities are secured, maintained, and healthy and establish priorities for remodeling & renovations for housing facilities. • Respond to communication (phone, email, etc.) from students, parents, families, colleagues, vendors, and other entities. • Represent the department and establish a collaborative relationship with other University departments and external partners such as vendors, media, and community agencies. • Coordinate crisis and risk management for the department, including maintaining departmental emergency response plans and serving in the Director on Call rotation. • Develop and revise departmental policies & procedures in alignment with University policy and local/state/federal laws. • Prepare reports and informational summaries on matters related to the department for University and external audiences.
Housing Operations (20%) • Evaluate and analyze University housing occupancy, retention, and projection trends. • Ensure that all room assignments and billings are completed and communicated to students. • Maintain housing contract and review requests from students for exception and exemption from housing contract stipulations.
• Provide leadership for departmental summer operations, including conferences/camps, short-term rentals, and summer programs. • Provide oversight of StarRez housing management system and other technical systems.
Residence Life & Student Development (15%) • Develop and oversee residential communities that utilize best practices in student development and research to create engaging and supportive learning environments that foster student wellbeing. • Develop and support residential learning communities and associated first year interest groups in partnership with academic units and academic programs. • Develop and support student conduct processes for housing residents, including serving as a hearing and appeal officer.
Divisional Responsibilities (10%) • Serve on the Student Life Directors Team and the Auxiliary Services Leadership Team. • Serve on and provide leadership for Student Life committees and work groups. • Represent department and Student Life on campus and University committees and work groups.
Other Duties (5%) • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: • BA/BS degree plus at least ten years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications: • Masters Degree in Higher Education Administration or related field • Prior experience in Housing and/or Residence Life at the Assistant/Associate Director and/or Director level • Prior experience supervising professional and student staff • Demonstrated student-centered leadership abilities • Demonstrated efforts to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion and evidence of the ability to work effectively with diverse groups • Demonstrated understanding of key issues and emerging trends within the field of higher education, student affairs, auxiliary services, housing, and residence life • Proficiency with Housing Management Systems, particularly StarRez • Demonstrated ability to use technology and data in support of administrative problem-solving and decision-making
