Job Description:

The Office of Residence Life at SUNY Fredonia seeks qualified candidates for the position of Residence Director (SL-2) with a start date of August 1, 2023.  It is confirmed that 1 position will be available for 2023 - 2024, and it is possible that additional vacancies will occur.  Residence Directors are 12-month, full-time staff members who are entrusted with the transformation of a mere physical structure of a residence hall into a vibrant community with safety, academic success, civility, and connection at its forefront.  Residence Directors supervise talented undergraduate Resident Assistants, facilitate conduct reviews with students alleged to have violated college policy, and work with our Department of Facilities Services to ensure that residence halls are properly cleaned and maintained.  Residence Directors will also mentor Graduate Assistant Residence Directors, providing guidance and informal supervision as well as assuming some additional administrative responsibilities.

Remuneration and Benefits:

Job Responsibilities:

The successful candidate for this Residence Director position will:

  • Assume responsibility for the general oversight and administration of a residence hall, including but not limited to openings and closings, work orders, occupancy reports, damage assessments, room change paperwork, programming, and student engagement;
  • Fully participate in Residence Director and Resident Assistant training sessions, scheduled before the start of each semester in August 2023 and January 2024;
  • Supervise undergraduate Resident Assistants, work study students, and Night Desk Attendants;
  • Mentor a part-time Graduate Assistant Residence Director, providing student conduct oversight, informal supervision, and general guidance where appropriate;
  • Advise a Residence Hall Council;
  • Collaborate with Resident Assistants, Hall Council leadership, and students to cultivate a community that prioritizes safety, academic success, civility, and connection;
  • Talk to students who are in crisis or distress, referring them to Counseling Services when appropriate;
  • Facilitate conduct reviews with students alleged to be in violation of college policy and determine educational sanctions for students who are deemed responsible for violations;
  • Mediate roommate conflicts as they arise;
  • Lead Residence Life committees (e.g., Student Recognition, Media and Marketing, etc.) and participate in campus-wide committees;
  • Participate in an emergency on-call rotation, both during the week and on weekends;
  • Assist with the operation of summer camps and conferences, including but not limited to preparing keys, room assignments, occupancy reports, check-in and check-out procedures, submitting maintenance requests, linen ordering, and acting as a liaison between Residence Life and conference contact persons; and
  • Be aware of, understand, and follow all university and SUNY policies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution;
  • Experience in or knowledge of student development;
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff and constituents in support of campus and department mission;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to the university, division, and profession.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field;
  • Demonstrated supervision skills, such as listening, motivating, goal-setting, and documenting;
  • Previous work experience in Residence Life or other Student Affairs functional areas;
  • Knowledge, experience, and/or training in emergency preparedness;
  • Knowledge of or experience in student conduct and helping others to be accountable for their behavior and decisions;
  • Willingness to work collaboratively;
  • Demonstrated administrative skills, such as accuracy and timeliness with respect to paperwork; and
  • Interest in and commitment to community engagement.

This is a full-time, term appointed, United University Professions (UUP)-represented position beginning August 1, 2023.
