Associate Dean for Student Life and Community Standards

St. Lawrence University seeks an accomplished and creative professional for the position of Associate Dean for Student Life and Community Standards.

St. Lawrence University is committed to building a diverse and inclusive community that supports community members of all backgrounds, and the Associate Dean must possess the cross-cultural abilities to build relationships and work effectively with students, colleagues, and community members with a variety of social identities.

The Associate Dean is directly responsible for overseeing the Student Code of Conduct, Student Judicial Affairs, and the Dean’s Panel which involves serious breaches of the code of conduct. This includes policy development, evaluation of risk, ensuring due process rights for students, exploring alternative dispute and conflict resolution, and providing leadership for issues associated with maintaining community standards. Knowledge and leadership in the areas of supporting student retention is critical as is demonstrated care in the work with students in crisis. This position also provides oversight, strategic direction, and supervision of staff and operations including Counseling Services, Health Services, and Title IX.

This role is responsible for ensuring appropriate training, awareness, and prevention programming including online, in-person, or passive for the University community. The individual in this position also provides support for the Title IX Coordinator to include assisting in day-to-day crisis support and intervention as well as serving as Resource Expert, Process Advisor, and Coordinator of Hearings. This position will ensure consistency of university policies, procedures, protocols, and Student Life practices in all University printed and electronic resources, including assistance with periodic updates of web content.

It is expected that this individual will be a university subject matter expert for matters related to sexual misconduct, interpersonal conflict and violence, and all forms of bias including gender-based discrimination.

The Associate Dean is expected to maintain effective and collaborative relationships with relevant members of the University and greater community and external constituents. They will also support Academic Affairs, the Office of General Counsel, Human Resources, and others.

The Associate Dean will also serve on a number of critical committees and panels, to include:

  • Academic A-Team
  • Academic Standing
  • Bias Incident Reporting Team
  • Residential Education Committee
  • Dean’s Panel (extreme judicial cases)
  • University Diversity Committee
  • Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Sexual Wellness Advisory Committee

The Associate Dean will also lead the Student Life Upper Level On-Call rotation group.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in student affairs, counseling, or related field.
  • 7 years of progressive senior-level leadership in higher ed admin and a commitment to residential liberal arts education and supervisory experience (or the equivalent)
  • A commitment to a judicial process that focuses on restorative justice/practices.
  • Knowledge and leadership in the areas of supporting student retention.
  • Knowledge of current trends and issues facing college students
  • Demonstrated experience engaging college students in difficult conversations and/or conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong intercultural competence and emotional intelligence (EQ)
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work effectively with all levels of constituents internal and external to the University.
  • Work experience with Title IX regulations and processes
  • Subject matter expert for matters related to sexual misconduct, interpersonal conflict and violence, and all forms of bias including gender-based discrimination.

The ideal candidate will possess an excellent track record of leadership and accountability in student affairs work, including in-depth familiarity in one or more areas within the student life portfolio, an understanding of restorative justice practices, and knowledge for working on a residential campus with a diverse student population. Experience with change management; superior communication and relationship-building skills; proven experience with staff supervision and team development, assessment and data-driven strategic planning, operations related to residential life and student crisis, and demonstrated respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of campus life will be important considerations in the selection of the next Associate Dean for Student Life and Community Standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10 years of progressive senior-level leadership in Higher Ed administration and a commitment to residential liberal arts education (or the equivalent)
  • Knowledge of relevant state and federal laws/regulations that impact student conduct policies and processes.
  • Experience supporting Title IX team.
  • Experience developing and facilitating training and/or educational programs.
  • Training in conflict resolution, mediation, restorative practices, and/or intergroup dialogue
