Summary of Position: Reporting to the Dean of Student Life and serving on the Student Life Leadership Team, the Director of Student Conduct is responsible for the administration of the University’s student conduct code/system. Responsibilities include reviewing incident reports, meeting with involved parties, investigating incidents, and adjudicating cases according to established policies and procedures.

The Director of Student Conduct provides training for University hearing officers/conduct case managers who administer the policies and procedures of the conduct code/system, offers alternative forms of dispute resolution, when appropriate, and provides information and referral regarding legal and regulatory issues in higher education.

The Office of Student Conduct is committed to a non-adversarial, educational, learning/development-based, and restorative conduct philosophy. The Office of Student Conduct assists students in understanding their rights and responsibilities as community members and serves as a liaison to faculty, staff, and community members in response to conduct matters. This position also collaborates with other campus departments to provide support with behavioral intervention strategies to assist students in their overall well-being and academic success.

Required Work Experience: Five years of student development/student affairs experience working in a college or university setting.
Two years of full-time experience adjudicating student conduct incidents in an educational setting.
Demonstrated experience in collaborating effectively and facilitating positive working relationships with students, parents, administrators, faculty, and staff, in a university setting.
Experience managing complex processes, tasks, and maintaining accurate records.
Experience developing and conveying effective communication.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: Preference will be given to individuals with a Master’s degree in higher/adult education, student development, counseling, administration, or related area, those with experience supervising regular staff/faculty, those with experience in adjudicating student conduct incidents with a restorative justice framework, and those with (3) or more years of Student Conduct experience and/or experience adjudicating sexual misconduct allegations, and those with experience working with first-generation students.

Knowledge of student development theory and student conduct processes, and applicable laws pertaining to students, such as the Clery Act, Title IX, the Violence Against Women's Act, and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
 
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Facilitate the reporting of student conduct complaints by individuals, departments, and organizations, conducts preliminary investigations into student conduct as appropriate by interviewing students and other witnesses, obtaining and analyzing evidence, and organizes conduct case meetings to resolve student conduct cases.

Ensure that student conduct is administered in a fair, impartial, non-adversarial, restorative, and educational manner.

Coordinate and participate in the investigation, and adjudication of conduct matters that involve students and registered student organizations.

Assist in educating students about their rights under Title IX and the Code of Student Community Standards. Coordinate with the Title IX office to support effective management of student cases including collaborating with hearing officers for formal resolutions of Title IX and other sexual misconduct cases and the assignment of outcomes as needed. Partner to provide measures for students as needed.

Advise students and student organizations, when appropriate, on matters of conduct/risk management.

Ensure that University Panels, the Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council Standards Boards, and other conduct boards that may form are conducted in accordance with recognized student conduct procedures by serving as the University’s advisor to such bodies, advising the chair regarding complex issues at hearings, clarifying conduct procedures, and interpreting University policies as necessary.

Coordinate communication with faculty at the request of the Dean of Student Life regarding students of concern.

Assist the Office of the Dean of Student Life as appropriate in addressing student needs through proper case management and support students in distress.

Provide leadership for the facilitation for the Behavior Review Team (BRT) as needed and serve on the Threat Assessment Team (TAT). This also involves leading discussions, gathering information for the BRT and/or TAT, and assist with crisis and case monitoring that require further action and/or follow-up.

Conduct student support meetings and contact parents and/or other family members as appropriate.

Supervise the Assistant Director of Student Conduct and others where applicable. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with University policies and applicable laws.

Facilitate a working environment that requires knowledge of, respect for, and the development of skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds.

Promote civility and respect of all groups and individuals on campus through the development and distribution of publications for the Office of the Dean of Student Life and the Office of Student Conduct that are congruent with the Code of Student Community Standards and University Core Values.

Provide educational outreach programs to the University campus and surrounding community regarding conflict resolution, the student conduct code and conduct process, and other services that the Office of Student Conduct provides, and serve as a resource to faculty, staff, and students who seek to resolve conflicts formally or informally.

Conduct an annual review of the Code of Conduct and student conduct processes and recommend appropriate revisions and provide statistical reports and summaries for various departments and agencies regarding caseloads, types of conduct cases, and outcomes.

Serve as the liasion to the Ten16 Recovery Network and our Collegiate Recovery & Wellness Center.

Assist in promoting the University’s primary prevention programs to prevent dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

Participate in annual training on how to conduct an investigation and hearing processes that protect the safety of victims on the issue of dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.

Partner with Ferris Statewide and Kendall College of Art & Design to address a variety of student life and student conduct concerns.

Assist the Dean of Student Life and collaborate with others to meet university compliance mandates under the jurisdiction of student life.

Work closely with Ferris Department of Public Safety, City Council, Big Rapids Police, Mecosta County Sheriff, and other internal departments and community service organizations.

Serve as liaison to General Counsel Office regarding student conduct matters.

Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of designated information and performing duties in compliance with applicable policies and procedures. Provide certification for agencies requesting student conduct information in accordance with FERPA.

Responsible for ensuring accurate statistical information for our Annual Security Report.

Ensure compliance with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act including annual notification and completing the biennial report

Serve on our OVW Grant Core Team and attend required Technical Assistance Trainings.

Serve as a representative of the Office of the Dean of Student Life on designated University, divisional, and departmental committees, workgroups, and or taskforces.

Contribute to the overall success of Student Life by performing all other related duties as assigned to assist the Dean of Student Life.

Remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, the development of professional network, and attending professional development courses and trainings.

Maintain cell phone availability for emergency and crisis response.

Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.

Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.
