Georgetown's Center for Student Engagement houses programs and supports organizations to foster student development, leadership and community building on campus. There are 50 student organizations focused on international politics, heritage, development and culture.
Job Overview
The Associate Director of Student Engagement oversees the management and advising of co-curricular educational opportunities for students engaged in more than 200 student organizations - with responsibilities than include but are not limited to:
Participates in the leadership of the department by supervising the Program Coordinators, the Administrative Assistant, and graduate student assistant(s)
Supports practical budget administration for 200+ student organizations, including financial transaction reconciliation, financial training, and account reconciliation
Acts as the office technology liaison for the campus engagement online platform
Leads university efforts to educate student leaders on hazing prevention and education, and collaborates with colleagues to coordinate response to reports of hazing
Oversees student organization compliance with university policies, including Bystander Education, Student Organization Standards, and a wide variety of financial policies
Assists the Director of the Center for Student Engagement in developing and administering policies for student organizations and their members; training and advising student leaders; and providing programming and technology support for more than 200 student organizations, including the Council of Advisory Boards, the Lecture Fund, and the Student Activities Commission.
Work Interactions
Reporting directly to - and supervised by - the Director of Student Engagement, the Associate Director in turn supervises the Senior Program Coordinator, Program Coordinator, Administrative Assistant and Graduate Student Assistant.
Along with the Director, this team makes up the core of the advising structure for Georgetown's more than 200 student organizations, and leads cross-university efforts to standardize and practice student organization advising.
They directly advise - applying complex management, programming and communication skills - several high profile, high risk student organizations - including the Lecture Fund, the Council of Advisory Boards, and the Student Activities Commission. These groups routinely encounter educational and philosophical issues centered on critical matters in higher education, such as upholding principles of free speech and expression, developing community in healthy ways, addressing problems characteristic of student organizations including hazing, misuse of alcohol, and unhealthy organizational culture.
They exercise strong communication skills and a high degree of discretion regarding sensitive matters of student decision making and leadership behavior; and takes an educational approach to advising students through difficult, sensitive and public situations.
The Assistant Director supports the Director in managing a fast-paced, unpredictable environment while maintaining an educational focus; uphold clear standard procedures and policies; and supervise and coach subordinate staff to exercise independent thinking and judgement.
Qualifications
5 years of relevant, progressively responsible leadership within Student Engagement or Campus Life
Supervisory experience
Demonstrated experience with administration, knowledge of student development theory, and legal issues
Proven management of significant financial and human resources
