Job Description

Job Summary

The Schacht Center for Health and Wellness provides accessible professional medical and mental health care as well as health promotion to Smith's diverse population. The Associate Director of Wellness Programming and Health Education, within the division of student affairs, strives to create a comprehensive wellbeing program framed by the core values of the division which are inclusion, access, growth, and engagement. This person will:

  • plan activities and provide educational opportunities to support habits of wellness with particular emphasis on developing life skills throughout a student's Smith career

  • seek to improve the health and well-being of Smith students through the development, implementation, and assessment of effective health promotion initiatives

  • engage in interactive partnerships and educational opportunities with campus stakeholders (e.g. medical, counseling, athletics, equity and inclusion, multicultural affairs, religious and spiritual life, residence life, student engagement, students)

  • attend regular meetings and serve on other departmental and all campus committees, as needed

Essential Functions

Program Implementation:

  • Plan and implement classes, speakers, and seminars that promote healthy lifestyles. Provide educational presentations, training programs and outreach in the areas of exercise, nutrition, sexual education, sleep, and stress management. Implementation may include training peer-educators to replicate programming on campus

  • Ensure that a portion of programming directly supports the Medical and Counseling departments scheduled initiatives and emergency programming

  • Provide programming and educational outreach on issues related to alcohol and other drugs, including the provision of alternative options

  • Work directly with Associate Dean of Student on student alcohol and drug amnesty

  • Oversee and administer federally mandated alcohol policies and educational initiatives including updating the SMART educational video covering alcohol, consent, and bystander education. Oversee the Drug Free Campus Committee

  • Plan and direct the wellness components of orientation and new student programs including orientation to campus culture, health promotion and wellbeing resources

  • May serve as a designated confidential resource provided pursuant to the 2021 Massachusetts Campus Safety Act. Duties include providing information about reporting options for sexual misconduct, and on and off campus services and resources as well as connecting parties to these services and resources; and participating in training in the awareness and prevention of sexual misconduct and in trauma-informed response. Serve as Title IX confidential resource contact for students

  • Collaborate with key campus partners in developing programming with particular attention to the Office of Equity and Inclusion, Title IX, athletics, and Student Affairs

  • Serve as the Smith College Representative on health and wellness related Five College working groups including Alcohol and Other Durgs (AOD), Sexual Assault Prevention and Intervention Committee, (SAPIC), and the disordered eating group

  • Provide one-on-one consultations to students as warranted/needed

Program Marketing and Communication:

  • Utilize health promotion techniques to market and promote health and wellbeing programs and resources to the college community

  • Develop and design effective wellness promotion initiatives that are inclusive of a range of historically marginalized populations

  • Work cooperatively and in coordination with the Schacht Center for Health and Wellness, students, staff, faculty, and other college constituents in carrying out goals of programs; establish and maintain working relationships directly with student groups and house communities, as well as other campus constituents

Advising and Supervision:

  • Supervise graduate interns, student intern(s), health wellness liaisons (HWL's) and student community health organizers (CHO's)

  • Developing and implementing training for student interns HWL's, and CHO's. Provide ongoing support and supervision

  • Hire and supervise a team bi-annually to update the SMART video to meet federal compliance guidelines for alcohol education as well as additional modules based on emerging student needs

  • Coordinate with College Public Health Concentration to develop praxis experiences in line with students' educational endeavors

Program Analysis and Strategic Planning:

  • Develop, implement and monitor the effectiveness of health promotion initiatives to improve health and wellbeing. Analyze, interpret and report research findings and recommendations. Remain apprised of research and best practices in the health promotion field

  • In partnership with the Office of Institutional Research, oversee the deployment of the American College Health Association's bi-annual National College Health Assessment survey and utilize the data to assess campus needs and design programming based on needs

  • Coordinate national health surveys and report research findings and recommendations

  • Work in concert with the Director of the Schacht Center as well as the Directors of Medical and Counseling Services to establish annual programming that highlights departmental integration and meet student needs

  • Contribute to strategic planning and vision building for Health Promotion and the Schacht Center for Health & Wellness. Submit an annual end-of-year report on programming and outcomes to the Director of the Schacht Center

  • Contribute to regularly scheduled Schacht Center leadership team meetings

Other duties as assigned by the Director of the Schacht Center for Health and Wellness.

Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)

Master's degree in higher education, health education, public health, or related field preferred, and three to five years of experience in a health promotion/health education and/or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Skills

Expertise and demonstrated ability to create a vision for health promotion on campus. Strong and demonstrated leadership and management skills. Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, attention to detail, and ability to take initiative and solve problems. Experience with diverse constituencies. Flexibility in personal and professional relationships in order to adapt to changing roles in college health service practices. Understanding of peer education and issues of concern in a residential gender minority liberal arts college. Proficiency in data analysis. Diverse marketing techniques including utilization of evolving social media platforms, google suite, and Qualtrics. Experience in higher education or another institutional setting is preferred. Candidate must have the capacity to work effectively in a multicultural setting and a working knowledge of the psychosocial stressors of living and working in a diverse community. A sincere interest in, and understanding of college students including developmental, social, psychological and health issues salient to this population. Availability on some nights and weekends.
