The Highlights:


The Clinical Professional Counselor is a full-time position within University Counseling & Psychological Services (UCAPS) that requires an experienced clinical counselor with well-developed clinical skills, and significant interests and experience in Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) treatment. In addition, this position supports UCAPS staff on substance abuse assessment, treatment and intervention. General duties includes triage, psychological evaluation/intake assessment, individual and group psychological counseling, and crisis intervention to a diverse DePaul undergraduate, graduate and professional students at Lincoln Park and/or Loop Campus within a brief therapy framework. This full-time professional will provide outreach and consultation to staff, faculty, students and parents. The Clinical Professional Counselor provides crisis counseling and consultation for daytime and after hours psychological emergencies 24/7 rotated among staff members. The Clinical Professional Counselor participates in UCAPS Clinical training program by providing supervision, seminars and consultation to graduate level trainees and maintains clinical records in accordance with legal and professional standards. Some travel to Loop Campus and/or Lincoln Park Campus is required.


What You'll Do:
  • Provides high quality counseling, psychological and crisis management services for DePaul students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate and professional programs.

    -Provides in-person and/or telemental health triage, intakes, group counseling and brief individual psychological counseling focused on student success.
    -Provides in-the-moment crisis support, guidance & brief case management to DePaul students who are currently enrolled and residing in or out of Illinois State, other countries, and study abroad programs.
    -Provides alcohol and other drugs (AOD) assessments and interventions.
    -Provides group counseling or therapy for students using harm reduction model.
    -Collaborates with Health Promotion & Wellness (HPW) Office to provide preventions workshops on alcohol and other drugs.
    -Collaborates with Health Promotion & Wellness (HPW) Office to provide on-going support group for students dealing with alcohol and substance misuse.
    -Maintains clinical records and necessary statistics of psychotherapeutic and other client contacts in compliance with legal and ethical standards and best practices.
    -Consults with psychiatrists in conjunction with prescribing and monitoring psychotropic medication for psychotherapy patients.
    -Consults with parents, physicians, faculty, academic deans, residence education staff, off-campus counseling services, other campus offices and students, when appropriate, in order to provide quality care to students.
    -Provides drop-in crisis and risk assessment, urgent and emergent counseling services.
    -Develops safety plans and facilitates psychiatric hospitalizations as necessary.
    -Manage follow-up with high risk students and students who have been hospitalized to ensure appropriate supports are in place to optimize student safety.
    -Supervises master-level trainees with clinical crises and urgent care situations.
    -Provides on-call after-hours, weekend and holiday coverage 24/7 on a rotating basis with other UCAPS staff members.
    -Provides some evening and weekend counseling and support services.
    -Provides Emergent Response Support services to students and campus partners as assigned by the Director.
    -Makes referrals to on-campus resources when appropriate.
    -Makes referrals to off-campus therapists, clinics, and hospitals, when appropriate.
  • Supervises unlicensed professional staff members and graduate level practicum students, externs, and interns.

    -Supervises unlicensed professional staff and master-level practicum students or externs as assigned.
    -Provides case management oversight and consultation to trainees, as assigned.
    -Leads training seminars for master-level practicum students, interns and externs.
  • Participates in regular UCS staff meetings, case conferences, and in-service/professional development training.

    -Serves on Student Affairs and university committees as appointed by the Director.
    -Develops didactic and psychoeducational presentations to groups inside and outside of University Counseling & Psychological Services.
    -Organizes and presents to UCAPS staff members based on areas of specialty and clinical expertise.
    -Provides administrative coordination of the Group Program or Outreach Program as assigned by the Director.
  • Administrative Duties.
    -Notes writing.
  • Provides outreach and consultation to students, faculty, staff and parents.

    -Conducts outreach and other student learning programs, as requested, orientation sessions for new students and emergency and postvention support to the campus community, as needed.
    -Conducts organized mental health awareness campaigns such as National Depression Screening Day, Eating Disorders Awareness Day
    -Develops and implements trainings on mental health awareness for Resident Advisors and student leaders.
    -Participates in campus-based mental health initiatives organized by UCAPS such as suicide prevention programs.
    -Stays current on relevant research and best practices regarding psychological services to the college student population.
    -Develops psychoeducational programming to address alcohol and other drugs misuse on campus and climate issues.
  • Supervises unlicensed professional staff members and graduate level practicum students, externs and interns as assigned.


What You'll Need:

  • Master's degree (MSW, MA) in a counseling/human services area such as Psychology, Social Work, or Counseling required. Clinical licensure to practice independently in Illinois (LCPC or LCSW) is preferred upon hire or will be required within 6 months of becoming eligible upon hire to apply for a clinical license in the State of Illinois.
  • Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor (CADC) is preferred.
  • Completion of internship at an accredited site.
  • One to two years of post-graduate experience, preferably in a counseling center setting, is preferred.
  • Have experiences in brief individual psychotherapy, group counseling, supervision of doctoral level graduate students in outreach and consultation.
  • Experience providing alcohol and other drug (AOD) assessments and interventions.
  • Familiarity with harm reduction model, motivational interviewing, and/or BASCIS program.
  • Ability to articulate the role of alcohol and other drug intervention and prevention on a college campus.
  • Experience providing AOD mental health program and services in a college counseling center.
  • Past experience working with the college-aged population, including a strong knowledge of the challenges experienced by young adults, preferred.
  • Knowledge or and demonstrated competence and sensitivity in working with a multi-cultural population.
  • Strong diagnostic and therapeutic skills, particularly using short-term treatment interventions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice, as well as personal and professional integrity.
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to collaborate with other departments and college administrators.
  • Strong crisis assessment and crisis management skills.
  • Ability to provide outreach and consultation to students, faculty, staff, and family members.
  • Excellent organizational, communication and human relations skills.
  • Understanding and commitment to the University's Catholic and Vincentian values and urban mission.
  • Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the State of Illinois. Or Licensed-eligible staff will be required within 6 months of hire to apply for a clinical license in the State of Illinois.
  • Keyboard skills and facility with Microsoft Office are essential.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Electronic Health Record.
  • Competent in providing counseling via Telemental Video Platform.
  • Understanding of assessment strategies and metrics in Student Affairs is necessary.
  • Provides on-call after-hours, weekend and holiday coverage 24/7 on a rotating basis with other UCAPS staff members.
  • Provides some evenings and weekend counseling and support services as needed.
  • Some travel to Loop Campus and/or Lincoln Park Campus is required.
