Associate Director of Career Services

Specific Job Title: Associate Director, Career Services

Reports to: Director, Career and Internship Advising

Job Summary:

The Associate Director, Career Services provides career education expertise in the STEM fields and represents University Career Services within specific colleges at St. John's University. The Associate Director will lead initiatives in collaboration with their respective college Career Services team and across the University to meet the needs of students, faculty, alumni, and employers. The Associate Director will provide career coaching and facilitated learning sessions through group and individual advisement that ensures students' career readiness. They understand industry workforce needs, remain current with trends and assist students to identify appropriate employment opportunities. The Associate Director will develop and maintain faculty relationships and create innovative programs that deliver career education across target populations. The Associate Director will contribute to the career readiness of St. John's University students, providing equitable access to career resources for all students and support the overall effectiveness of the Career Services department and the Division of Student Affairs.

Essential Functions:

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The description of the task should include the intended result or outcome, e.g., compiles monthly reports to allow monitoring of the department's budget.
  • Acquire and maintain an intimate knowledge of College programs and pedagogy related to the STEM fields to provide intentional career programming, resources, and advisement to selected populations.
  • Support the career services team strategy and execution of outreach and programming. Collaborate closely with College faculty, departments, student groups, and alumni to develop and lead both foundational training and customized career-related programs.
  • Maximize career resources available for students across St. John's colleges and campuses, as a member of the centralized University Career Services team.
  • Provide comprehensive individual and group advisement to target population(s) for students and alumni.
  • Assist the Directors in the planning, development, evaluation and administration of department programs and policies.
  • Serve as a resource to University career advisement professionals regarding department policies and procedures, effective counseling techniques, workshop planning and coordination of department activities.
  • Participate in the training, development, and guidance of student workers, graduate assistants, and career peers.
  • Actively contribute to the recruitment process through student preparation and the utilization of technology to meet student and employer needs
  • Facilitate advanced level career development workshops and programming for graduate level students and other targeted groups.
  • Contribute to the selection or development of career planning and job search resources to enhance students' career preparedness.
  • Remain informed of national, state and local hiring practices, guidelines, and labor related issues.
  • Assist students to develop career decision making skills, utilizing career assessment tools when appropriate.
  • Foster a productive and inclusive environment that encourages student enrollment, retention, persistence, and positive outcomes.
  • Support the mission and strategic priorities of the University.


Competencies:
  • Excellent resume, interviewing and job search skills required.
  • Demonstrate innovative approaches that empower students to successfully navigate the journey from college to career.
  • Must be collaborative, self-directed, outcome oriented, and able and willing to work under pressure with frequent interruptions. Possess strong customer service focus for internal and external constituents and success working both independently and in cross-functional teams.
  • Proven success at navigating organizational structures by leading through influence.
  • Must remain knowledgeable about employment and industry trends related to STEM.
  • Proficient in the use of web-based software. Proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, experience teaching, training or facilitating workshops. Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations to groups.


Work Environment:

This position operates in a professional office environment; This position is required to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This position is full-time, and the expected hours are generally Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position occasionally requires extended hours and weekend work.

Travel is primarily local and may include visits to the other NY campuses.

Required Education and Experience:
  • Minimum of five to seven years of experience in career services, human resources, career coaching, corporate recruiting/business development, or related field.
  • Proven success in developing and maintaining internal and external relationships.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Proficient with Excel, PowerPoint, MicroSoft365 and database software (e.g., Handshake, Access, etc.)
  • Familiarity with higher education
  • Master's degree
  • Experience with on-campus recruitment
  • Proficiency with social media as a recruitment tool
  • Familiarity with faith-based organizations

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $75,000 - $78,000. St. John's University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

This position may be relocated to any of St. John's University's physical locations at any time.
