Position Focus: Provides non-clinical counseling and on-site wellness support to Yale College students and working closely and collaboratively with Residential College Deans.
Reporting to the Director of Yale College Wellness Programs, Community Wellness Specialists work with individual students referred to them by Residential College Deans. CWSs provide case management and college-wide group wellness programming. Working on a wide range of issues, CWSs also serve Yale College students in programming to develop strategies for time and stress management, resilience and coping, conflict resolution, social and cultural belonging, and wellness and self-care. The CWSs will support several residential colleges and provide services within those colleges. As this role is to enhance student access to services through proximity, the CWSs provide services during evening and weekend hours.
CWSs will refer students to a licensed Yale Mental Health and Counseling staff for psychotherapy and therapeutic interventions. CWSs provide case management, 1:1 wellness check-ins and college-wide group wellness programming.
Yale College has more than 6,000 undergraduate students. About 22% of students are the first in their family to attend college and about 20% are Pell-grant eligible. Students are assigned to one of 14 residential colleges. Each residential college has a head of college, a member of the faculty, a residential college dean, a head of college senior administrative assistant, a college dean senior administrative assistant, a service assistant for the head and an operations manager for the college. Residential college deans are the chief academic officer of the college and provide advising and non-clinical counseling to the students in their college.

Essential Duties: 1. Holds by-appointment individual counseling sessions with students and technical interns. 2. Facilitates group counseling sessions on a set schedule. 3. Partners with Yale Behavioral Health to refer students with immediate clinical needs. 4. Partners with Title IX Coordinator/Dean's Designee for Discrimination and Harassment to refer students with immediate confidential needs to appropriate Yale resources. 5. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience: Master’s Degree in Psychology, Social Work, or related field. Two years’ work experience in a clinical setting counseling students individually and/or in groups or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Demonstrated ability to counsel undergraduate students. Sensitivity towards intergenerational communication, racial/ethnic identity processing, and issues of belonging across race, gender, sexuality, socioeconomics, etc.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Demonstrated ability to provide sensitive non-clinical counseling and follow-up contact with students with serious mental illness and those in crisis (e.g. after a psychiatric hospitalization), as well as students returning from time away from Yale (leave of absence).
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Strongly demonstrated counseling, collaboration, and communication skills. Ability to develop, conduct and facilitate group discussions.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Demonstrated ability to support students with issues of stress, coping, and conflict-resolution through de-escalation, wellness and resilience strategies.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Ability to manage working with multiple reporting lines and prioritize time-sensitive issues. Ability to work a flexible schedule to provide services when students’ schedules allow.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: Knowledge of Yale’s Residential College system. Experience with students in a highly-selective, liberal arts environment.
