The Associate Dean of Clinical Curriculum will be a senior faculty member with an exemplary reputation as an academic leader in medical education and medical education administration.Â This position will report to the Senior Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education and be a member of the medical school leadership team.Â
The Associate Dean will play a pivotal role in aligning academic and operational processes within the School of Medicine and have a primary responsibility for development, maintenance and evaluation of the competency-based curriculum across all years of UME.Â
The time requirements for this position are estimated at 0.6 FTE
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as a senior advisor to the Senior Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) and as a member of the Saint Louis University School of Medicine (SLU SOM) leadership team.
Collaborate with key faculty leaders, curriculum committees and curriculum stakeholders to ensure that programs, resources, and services are prioritized and tailored appropriately to meet both the needs of learners and SLU SOM educational mission.
Assume oversight of the clinical years of medical school, in partnership with the Senior Associate Dean for UME.
Serve as chair of the clinical curriculum subcommittee that reports directly to the curriculum committee.
Work with institutional offices to review trends in curriculum evaluation and highlight opportunities to improve performance and implement related change to the clinical curriculum.
Act as Senior Associate Dean of UME at appropriate curriculum committee and other educational meetings.
Aid in the drafting of summary reports on curriculum and medical education.
Aid in the recruitment of faculty or other professionals to participate as lecturers, small group leaders, and course leaders.
Use appropriate technology in all functions
Explore and implement high-impact, evidence-based curricular changes, interfacing with Clerkship Directors and other faculty, to restructure portions of the current clinical curriculum as necessary, and respond to concerns or suggestions from students and faculty.
Partner with faculty to assist with revisions/updates to current clinical courses and the development of new courses.
Attend committee meetings related to the clinical curriculum
Assist in planning the Medical Education Curriculum retreat
Develop innovative approaches to teaching and assessing clinical skills.
Establish effective and collaborative working relationships with SLU SOM faculty and clerkship/course directors and clerkship/course coordinators.
Plan remediation with course/clerkship directors for students who fail or have marginal performance on assessments.
Work with the Office of Student Affairs in formulating effective clinical remediation plans to keep students directed towards graduation.
Work in conjunction with Clerkship Directors to visit clinical sites and ensure that sites meet LCME standards.
Monitor and review Clerkship Evaluation Surveys, Site Evaluation Surveys and Faculty Evaluation Surveys for statistical outliers which may require additional attention.
Organize Personal and Professional Development III Days
Other duties as assigned by Senior Associate Dean of UME or Dean of SLU SOM.Â
Minimum qualifications include the completion of an MD or DO degree, board certification in an appropriate medical specialty, good standing with state and local licensing and credentialing boards and minimum of 7 years of experience in medical education.Â Rank of Associate Professor and Professor preferred (tenure or non-tenure track).Â
