Job Summary: | The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Laboratory of Genetics (LOG) seeks a dynamic professional to lead our undergraduate academic advising office as an academic advisor.
The LOG academic advisor assists students throughout their undergraduate academic careers, especially during periods of significant transitions. The individual in this role must utilize a high-touch advising model to develop supportive and compassionate professional relationships with assigned advisees. Alongside their work with students, the academic advisor works collaboratively with departmental representatives to implement and manage student and academic services, including curricular management, schedule of classes, and enrollment management.

We are part of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences as well as the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Department has more than 350 undergraduate students in the major of Genetics and Genomics, housed in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

Responsibilities: | Engages students in decision-making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection and degree requirements. Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising-related events and programs. Works to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment. - 5% Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
- 35% Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match the appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
- 5% Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
- 5% Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
- 10% Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
- 5% Proactively engages students as needed
- 15% Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
- 20% Supports academic, course, and curricular planning and implementation of the academic structure at the departmental level.

Education: | Required Bachelor's Degree Preferably in student affairs, higher education administration, counseling, or biological science-related.

Qualifications: | Two years of experience in college/university student services or administrative employment is required as are the following qualities:
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a student-focused approach - Strong organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to problem-solve, multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines with strong attention to detail. - A collegial style, with the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students across campus, as well as prospective students and their families. - Commitment to student diversity and inclusivity. - Professional written and oral communication skills; ability to organize and communicate complex information effectively. - Familiarity with a computer environment, electronic and internet-based communications, budgeting, spreadsheets, databases, and word processing software. - Experience building cross-campus or comparable relationships desirable. - Knowledge of UW Madison advising tools and processes is a plus. |
