The New School was founded by forward-thinking educators in 1919 to defy the intellectual constraints of a traditional college education. We are seeking an experienced, highly motivated, socially engaged university administrator to serve as an Academic Advisor. 

The Student Success Advisor (SSA) is responsible for providing academic and career advising according to degree requirements, students♠abilities, and aspirations; to help students persist academically to graduation, and provide adequate career preparation leading up to graduation from The New School. The SSA is an integral member of the Academic Advising & Career Development team in the Student Success division and reports to leadership within the Student Success Advising teams in the colleges. This position provides degree-seeking students one-on-one and group academic and career advising. The SSA also participates in programs and systems to support student persistence and success.

This position is a Local 1205 Professional Unit position covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Local 1205 Teamsters and The New School.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Developmentally advise students in academic and career success, goal-setting, and achievement via scheduled and walk-in advising sessions.  Incorporate instruments/assessments into advisement to help students understand their personal preferences, strengths, and weaknesses as they pertain to academic and career decision-making.

  • Use critical and creative thinking skills, exercise broad-ranging decision-making and insightful judgment to help students chart potential paths to reach academic and professional goals.  Provide timely intervention and support to assist students in achieving academic and career success.

  • Provide guidance regarding University, school-specific, and program-specific policies with respect to student status, transfer credit evaluations, advanced placement and advanced standing requests, exceptions to degree requirements, degree audits to determine student eligibility to graduate, probationary status, and dismissals. 

  • Teach students to use resources for learning about academic choices and careers, develop interviewing and networking skills, prepare resumes and cover letters, and create online branding.

  • Coordinate and collaborate on initiatives, events, and programs that promote student persistence, retention, and academic and career development learning.

  • Maintain and update student records and data, provides regular reports including documentation of student interactions, in relevant institutional systems (Banner, DegreeWorks, Starfish, NACElink) accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Sustain an accurate, up-to-date body of knowledge about curricula across the institution and the current career landscape in the relevant fields.

  • Participate in orientation, academic and career services events, recruitment, student life and engagement initiatives, and commencement.

  • Establish and cultivate relationships with administrators and faculty to ensure accurate and timely communication of student needs, obstacles, and questions.

  • Serve as a liaison to faculty in assigned programs regarding academic planning, curriculum, and career outcomes; attend and participate in regular meetings held by programs and schools.

  • Actively participate in creating and fostering a culture of inclusion; possess and develop in self and others: intercultural competency skills that promote a culture of equity, inclusion, social justice, and community engagement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelorâ™s degree and 2 years related experience in higher education with a focus on advising and student engagement

  • Demonstrated effectiveness  in interpersonal skills, including sensitivity to and awareness of cultural differences

  • Demonstrated intercultural competence and a continuing commitment to advance equity, inclusion, and social justice practices in support of a diverse community

  • Ability to exercise professional judgment and critical thinking skills to help others make values-based decisions regarding academic, career, and other success paths

  • Strong presentation, written, and verbal communication skills 

  • Demonstrated planning and organizational skills, and ability to work on multiple projects both independently and as part of a team 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and ability to learn new computer applications 

  • Able to lift and carry objects, less than 40 pounds, on occasion 

  • Ability to adhere to University COVID-19 Policy 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masterâ™s degree in Higher Education, Higher Education Administration, or a field related to academic offerings at Parsons School of Design

  • 3 or more years of professional work experience in academic advising

  • Experience in the area of equity, inclusion, and social justice 

  • Knowledge of Banner, DegreeWorks, and Starfish

  • Experience with NACADA, EAB, NACE, NASPA, ACPA, LinkedIn, or other advising-related professional organizations and tools
     

WORK MODE

  • Hybrid/Split - Employees hired for this position have regularly scheduled, consistent percentage of time on campus (ex 1-4x/week) and also work some of the time remotely. 

SALARY

$58,500
