The Office of Undergraduate Biology (OUB) provides comprehensive, high-quality academic, career, and research advising services to prospective students, current undergraduates, alumni, and faculty. Biological sciences is a cross-college major with nearly equal numbers of students in CALS and the College of Arts & Sciences. The primary mission of the OUB is to serve the diverse needs of these students while ensuring that they successfully navigate the biological sciences major and achieve their academic and career aspirations. The OUB is staffed with five advising professionals and two administrative staff who help students plan for and reach their academic and career goals.
What you will do:
The Assistant Director will report to the Director of Advising and Operations in the Office of Undergraduate Biology and coordinate, develop, implement, and measure programs that facilitate access to and success in research for the 1300+ students in the Biological Sciences major.
This position is part-time (20 hours per week, in-person) and is located in Ithaca, New York. The position may exceed 20 hours a week during the week of fall orientation (August), the Biological Sciences recognition event (May), and Bio Sci Honors Celebration & Symposium (May).
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate the Biological Sciences Honors Program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences (approximately 100 applicants/year); advise students interested in participating in undergraduate research through individual student appointments and group presentations.
- Develop research databases; oversee management of BIOG 2990 & 4990 research courses (approximately 600 students/semester).
- Provide advising services to current and prospective Biological Sciences majors regarding undergraduate research and pre-graduate advising.
- Collaborate with the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) student services staff and University Academic and Student Affairs professionals to assess, design, develop and implement programs and services related to undergraduate research.
- Attend OUB-sponsored events such as orientation, graduation, faculty/student programs, alumni events.
- Cultivate relationships with other Cornell University science departments, Biological Sciences alumni, and others to generate summer research opportunities for students.
- Communicate with administrators and advisors to provide information about undergraduate research.
- Solicit input from the OUB faculty and directors of undergraduate studies regarding overall OUB research efforts.
- Develop resources to promote effective mentoring of undergraduate research students including faculty workshops, and online resources.
What We Need:
- Bachelor's degree in the physical or life sciences and a minimum of 2-3 years of experience related to research mentoring in higher education.
- Experience working with undergraduate researchers and the ability to generate enthusiasm for undergraduate teaching and research.
- Experience designing and delivering programs to students, preferably including students from traditionally disadvantaged populations.
- Ability to apply problem-solving skills in a fast-paced academic environment to contribute to a high-performing team
- Ability to provide effective guidance/instruction to diverse stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, and visitors.
- Ability to plan and execute events open to 150+ attendees.
- Ability to strategically manage multiple prioritize while seeking feedback from relevant stakeholders, including OUB staff, students, and faculty.
- Ability to collaborate effectively on projects with OUB staff, faculty, and campus colleagues across several colleges at Cornell.
- Demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships, both internally and externally, with a high degree of sensitivity for the needs of a very diverse student population.
- Demonstrated exemplary communication and organization skills, including excellent public speaking skills.
- Strong track record of creative problem solving and action with respect to strategic initiatives, organizational priorities, and management of issues on a day-to-day basis.
- Demonstrated high degree of professionalism, discretion, and judgment.
- Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as essential job functions require.
If you possess these experiences and skills this may be the role for you! There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, to include:
- Master's in the physical or life sciences preferred.
- 3+ years of research mentoring experience with high achieving and/or STEM students preferred.
- Knowledge of student development theory and the social-emotional issues of young adults preferred.
- Experience with leading undergraduate research programs and supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds desirable.
- Experience assessing, designing, developing, and implementing programs related to undergraduate research (e.g., mentoring programs, getting started in research, grant writing).
- Familiarity with student information systems, electronic management of sensitive information and using technology in academic advising helpful.
