Job Duties:

This position provides specialized counseling services to ECU student-athletes. This individual provides counseling and crisis services, relevant training, consultation, and educational outreach services to student-athletes, coaches, and athletics department staff. This position will interact on an as-needed basis with student-athletes, parents, department personnel, physicians, faculty, deans, resident life staff, and on/off campus counseling services when appropriate to provide quality care. This position oversees the delivery of clinical services provided to student-athletes in a collaborative effort to enhance the personal, academic, and athletic success of ECU student-athletes. This position is responsible for the development and implementation of philosophies, policies, and procedures of counseling service operations for student-athletes. In the performance of duties, this position will utilize the following: integrity, strong communication skills, ability to manage conflict effectively, awareness of potential safety concerns, collaborative approach, solid decision making and problem-solving skills, emphasis on and commitment to providing quality service, and adaptability.

Reporting to the Center for Counseling and Student Development Director, the individual serving in this position is responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

Position Duties:

Counseling duties (60%)
Ø Counsel individuals and groups regarding personal, social, career and academic development
Ø Provide crisis intervention services including screening, consultation, and safety assessment
Ø Provide counseling and limited follow up services as needed
Ø Make referrals to other providers and agencies as appropriate
Ø Conduct evaluations for student-athletes in individual and group settings. Provide crisis management, triage, and walk-in emergency services. Maintain appropriate clinical records
Ø Consult with parents, department personnel, physicians, faculty, deans, residence life staff, on and off campus counseling services, and other individuals when appropriate in order to provide quality care
Ø Consult and collaborate closely with the ECU Sports Medicine Staff, including athletic trainers and physicians
Ø Attend and participate in clinical Care team meetings and other staff meetings as requested

Outreach duties (20%)
Ø Plan, conduct, and evaluate outreach programs and services designed to facilitate student development and work cooperatively with university colleagues in developing and implementing quality programs.
Ø Participate in ongoing professional development
Ø Provide psycho-educational programs related to mental health and wellness for student-athletes and other members of the ECU Athletics Department
Ø Supervise mental health treatment, prevention, and education programs

Other duties (20%)
Ø Abide by all written policies, procedures, and guidelines of East Carolina University, the Department of Athletics, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and all applicable conferences or associations
Ø Build quality relationships and work collaboratively and professionally with Athletics Department, Pirate Club and University staff, students, and all constituencies and stakeholders
Ø Perform other duties as assigned
Ø Nights, weekends, holidays, extended hours, and travel may be required in performance of duties

Minimum Education/Experience:

Ø Master's degree in counseling, social work, psychology or marriage and family therapy, or terminal degree in another appropriate human services field
Ø Licensed in the State of North Carolina in relevant field, or licensed in another state and eligible for North Carolina licensure
Ø At least three years counseling experience
Ø Demonstrated knowledge or experience in working with student athletes
Ø Experience providing counseling and crisis services and providing quality outreach programming
Ø Demonstrated ability to counsel a diverse student population and demonstrated competency in adapting to a variety of student/client backgrounds and cultures to provide effective counseling and treatment

Through collaboration, the division provides programs and services that are grounded in theory, assessment, and sound practice.

The purpose of the Center for Counseling & Student Development is to assist students in addressing developmental and personal issues that may impede academic performance. The Center offers counseling services to enrolled students at no cost beyond what the student pays in tuition and fees. Counseling services include individual and group therapy, crisis intervention and outreach.
