Position Summary:

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Director, Asian American Cultural Center for the Asian American Cultural Center (AACC). Reporting to the Executive Director of Intercultural Engagement & Inclusion Initiatives, the Director will provide leadership, management, supervision and administrative oversight of the Asian American Cultural Center. The Director will manage the general operations of the center which offers resources, educational programs, and services to engage students and support their holistic development. The position will work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and alumni to advance the development of the center and plan for its support and nurture to address the needs of the APIDA student body.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the Asian American Cultural Center through the supervision of staff, management of facilities, administration of budget, and preparation of reports.
  • Directs the vision, goal setting, and strategic planning of the center.
  • Works with divisional development officer to cultivate relationships with possible donors and serves as the steward of donations to the center.
  • Fosters positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the broader community to broaden the scope and reach of the center.
  • Provides oversight in the development, administration and evaluation of a comprehensive array of short and long-term programs, initiatives and services to increase awareness of the APIDA diaspora experiences to the Rutgers University community.
  • Identifies, develops, and implements new initiatives/services as needed to address the evolving needs of students.
  • Provides direction and oversight over the center's Intern Program, Junior Intern Program, and Peer Mentoring Program.
  • Partners with Residence Life and the Department of American Studies to provide direction for the Asian American Identities & Images Living Learning Community's seminars and educational programs.
  • Works with the other cultural centers to develop intercultural and intersectional programs and initiatives.
  • Collaborates with other student affairs and University departments including the other cultural centers, student involvement areas, academic departments, administrative offices and student organizations/governing groups for collaborative programs and initiatives.
  • Advises the Asian Student Council, the cultural umbrella council of over 40 recognized student organizations, and individual students, including students in crisis; Provides direction and oversight of student leadership development opportunities for student leaders; Connects students in distress with the appropriate campus support resources; Liaises with the Deans of Students, Residence Life, the Counseling Center, Student Involvement, Health Services, and other administrative units in support of students' interests.
  • Supports and advances the efforts of the Cultural Center Collaborative through active and intentional leadership, participation and collaboration.
  • Collaborates with the student affairs and academic units to implement and achieve institutional and/or divisional goals.
  • Serves on divisional and campus-wide committees representing the cultural centers and advocating for needs of students.
  • Performs, facilitates, coordinates and delivers on tasks as needed by the Executive Director or higher leadership, inclusive of time-sensitive divisional and/or campus-wide matters.
  • Responds to the needs of the campus community as needed in times of crisis.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree, preferably in student affairs, higher education administration, college student personnel, social work, counseling or a related field.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in cultural center management, multicultural student affairs or other comparable collegiate or community-based setting serving the Asian Pacific Islander Desi American community or five (5) years of professional experience in student affairs, higher education administration, or comparable community organization settings.

Equipment Utilized:

  • Candidate must have proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint), Microsoft Outlook e-mail, video conferencing technologies (Zoom, Cisco WebEx, Skype, and Google Meet), and other relevant computer programs used in both in-person and virtual office settings.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Candidate should be able to lift and carry 25 lbs.

Special Conditions:

  • Due to the nature of work of the center and student affairs in general, this individual will be required to work some weeknights and weekends as needed throughout the academic year for center and university programs and functions.
  • Clean driving record.
